“A terrifying science thriller that reads like SILENCE OF THE LAMBS as written by Michael Crichton. Inventive and deeply disturbing.”

NOCTURNAL is simultaneously a horror/thriller, a high-action comic book of a novel, and a throwback to classic 80s buddy-cop movies. If you’re a child of the 80s, you’ll love this one.

From the book jacket:Homicide detective Bryan Clauser is losing his mind. How else to explain the dreams he keeps having—dreams that mirror, with impossible accuracy, the gruesome serial murders taking place all over San Francisco? How else to explain the feelings these dreams provoke in him—not disgust, not horror, but excitement.

As Bryan and his longtime partner, Lawrence “Pookie” Chang, investigate the murders, they learn that things are even stranger than they at first seem. For the victims are all enemies of a seemingly ordinary young boy—a boy who is gripped by the same dreams that haunt Bryan. Meanwhile, a shadowy vigilante, seemingly armed with superhuman powers, is out there killing the killers. And Bryan and Pookie’s superiors—from the mayor on down—seem strangely eager to keep the detectives from discovering the truth.

Doubting his own sanity and stripped of his badge, Bryan begins to suspect that he’s stumbled into the crosshairs of a shadow war that has gripped his city for more than a century—a war waged by a race of killers living in San Francisco’s unknown, underground ruins, emerging at night to feed on those who will not be missed.

And as Bryan learns the truth about his own intimate connections to the killings, he discovers that those who matter most to him are in mortal danger…and that he may be the only man gifted—or cursed—with the power to do battle with the nocturnals.

Featuring a dazzlingly plotted mystery and a terrifying descent into a nightmarish underworld—along with some of the most incredible action scenes ever put to paper, and an explosive, gut-wrenching conclusion you won’t soon forget — Nocturnal is the most spectacular outing to date from one of the genre’s brightest stars.

“NOCTURNAL will make the end-of-year favorite lists for mysteries, thrillers, science fiction, horror, and yes, just plain old fiction, period. If you are a fan of genre fiction, you have to read NOCTURNAL.” Joe Hartlaub,
“For fans of realistically presented horror fiction, this is a must-read.” Booklist
“A hugely enjoyable read by an author who continues to grow.” Brittish Fantasy Society
“Some of the most beautiful carnage we’ve seen in ages.”
Sigler delivers again in this fiercely creepy page-turner.” San Jose Mercury News
“Do yourself a favor and read Nocturnal, unless you’re excessively squeamish and hate “no-no” words. Then don’t.”
“From the depth of the characters Sigler builds, to the detailed world he creates under the surface of San Francisco (literally in some cases) this book is gripping, terrifying and heartwrenching all at once.”
“If you’re a fan of police procedurals from Michael Connolly, Elmore Leonard or Joseph Wambaugh and you miss the bio-tech science fiction of the late, great Michael Crichton, you’ll find “Nocturnal” a treat.” Huntington News
“This is one of the most original pieces of genre fiction I have read in a long time. Sigler is like Stephen King with a huge dose of testosterone and adrenaline.” Crimespree Magazine
“If you’re searching for mind-twisting, nightmare-inducing escapism that takes you to the brink of doom, look no further than Scott Sigler.” Jeremy Robinson, author of SECONDWORLD

Looks like it has been a while since this has been asked. Are there any sequels to nocturnal? I was listening to your throwback episodes on the podcast and ended up buying the book and the audiobook. I just finished it and now I want more. I want to see the Savior. I want to see what happened with the rest of Marie’s children. I want to see if a new king appears. I want to see where our heroes are now.

Who would win in a fight, “Scary Perry Dawson” (assuming he never got injured and continued his fb career) or Quentin Barnes?

My money is on Dawson…INFECTED FOR THE WIN!!!!

Hey Scott, I just finished listening to the Nocturnal audio book every day on my long commutes. Congrats, you just just became my favorite author. Your book kept my mind off of recent trying times all day at work, and even inspired me to start drawing again. Don’t worry though, my drawings are nothing like Rex’s… Not only that but the relationship between Bry-bry and Bo-Bobin made me realize something important about someone who I had been avoiding. She said that she misses me too (: Thank you. Please complete the Nocturnal universe! I need more!

P.S. The story of the zed chromosome would make the ultimate anime.. just saying $$$. Peace out Columbo. Keep up the good work.

    Hi Scott,

I’m sure you get asked this all the time, but will there be a sequel to Nocturnal or a book set in the same universe? I really loved the book and hope it becomes a series!! Love all your books!!

    1. A Sigler

There are two sequels and one prequel stuck in Scott’s noggin, but none are currently on the schedule to be written, meaning they won’t see the light of day in 2015 or 2016. Perhaps after that, but no way to know.

    1. A Sigler

      Hi Michael,

My guess is that the books on Downpour are INFECTED, CONTAGIOUS and ANCESTOR. Those are books from Crown. They have a lot more pull than we do in the publishing world. A LOT.

I can tell you that our books (which include the audiobooks for NOCTURNAL and PANDEMIC) are exclusive with Audible, so I don’t think they’ll be on Downpour, I’m sorry to say.

It’s a simple economics question for us: there are two of us here at Empty Set, and if we do Audible, that gets us also on iTunes and Amazon. Between those three outlets we reach well over 95% of our audience, and maximizing the profit from those outlets and that 95% makes the most sense. The better we do, the more we can do. Plus, one upload and we reach 95% of our target market is much less work for me.

So, unless Downpour becomes a part of the Amazon empire, I don’t think we’ll make it there. We try to mitigate the fallout of those decision by always the free podcast option as well.

  13. Niels Toft

You mention that the audio book is available on but it doesn’t appear when I search for it. Is it delayed or am I just wrong?
Long time junkie, the first taste was all I needed, now I want more and I want to pay for it =)

      1. olly

Dude! I so cant wait for the podcast of this to drop! I missed hearing the first draft of this before it was pulled, and have been thumb twiddling ever since!….. Please tell me it is going to be you who narrates it…. Your previous podcast works have been ‘Peak’, and am really looking forward to your ‘Sigler narrative’ once again..

Thanks for making books amazing for me again, and my working week worth living for once more.

  14. Erin

Does anybody know what had happened to the Nocturnal podiobook??
I downloaded it a wee while back and listening now, I’ve discovered I’m missing a few chapters! Absolutely distraught 🙁

  15. Artificial_Selection

As for the speculation above, I concur with Belladonna420.  I don’t think Scott was dropping an Easter Egg about the eponymous antagonists of the as-yet incomplete book, DESCENDANT.  Though, I think it’d be awesome of he did do something like that.  But the Prawat, as I currently imagine them, are likely to be more mechanical, or perhaps some blend of biological and mecahnical, based on what Scott said in this current episode.  That’s my take, at least.

  16. Artificial_Selection

    Taxonomy and Phylogeny

Scott, this latest episode of THE ALL-PRO is one of my favorites so far! Finally, some nitty-gritty taxonomy and explanation of some of the other races we’ve heard mention of. I was wondering if the Dolphins were really dolphins, or if that was just a nickname. Now we know. Also really dug the discussion of the Prawat and other forms of artificial life.

I’m an evolutionary biologist, so this shit’s right up my alley.  Keep up the great work!

  17. Belladonna420

    In this case,

I think the FDO is simply referring to a descendant in the literal sense – “something deriving in appearance, function, or general character from an earlier form”.

FDO you sneaky fiend I  think I might have heard a refrence to descendant in this epi being that the (i hope im spelling this corectly) prowat race are the descendants and are discovered in 2015. this also could point to the release of the book being 2015
