“Sigler is in full control of his talent for sharp characterization and amazing visualization.”
— Charlaine Harris, Author of the Sookie Stackhouse novels upon which the HBO series TRUE BLOOD is based.
“Red meat for readers who wish Harry Potter had swapped his YA credentials for a badge and gun.”
— Kirkus Reviews
“A terrifying science thriller that reads like SILENCE OF THE LAMBS as written by Michael Crichton. Inventive and deeply disturbing.”
— Jonathan Maberry, NY Times bestselling author of ASSASSIN’S CODE
NOCTURNAL is simultaneously a horror/thriller, a high-action comic book of a novel, and a throwback to classic 80s buddy-cop movies. If you’re a child of the 80s, you’ll love this one.
From the book jacket:Homicide detective Bryan Clauser is losing his mind. How else to explain the dreams he keeps having—dreams that mirror, with impossible accuracy, the gruesome serial murders taking place all over San Francisco? How else to explain the feelings these dreams provoke in him—not disgust, not horror, but excitement.
As Bryan and his longtime partner, Lawrence “Pookie” Chang, investigate the murders, they learn that things are even stranger than they at first seem. For the victims are all enemies of a seemingly ordinary young boy—a boy who is gripped by the same dreams that haunt Bryan. Meanwhile, a shadowy vigilante, seemingly armed with superhuman powers, is out there killing the killers. And Bryan and Pookie’s superiors—from the mayor on down—seem strangely eager to keep the detectives from discovering the truth.
Doubting his own sanity and stripped of his badge, Bryan begins to suspect that he’s stumbled into the crosshairs of a shadow war that has gripped his city for more than a century—a war waged by a race of killers living in San Francisco’s unknown, underground ruins, emerging at night to feed on those who will not be missed.
And as Bryan learns the truth about his own intimate connections to the killings, he discovers that those who matter most to him are in mortal danger…and that he may be the only man gifted—or cursed—with the power to do battle with the nocturnals.
Featuring a dazzlingly plotted mystery and a terrifying descent into a nightmarish underworld—along with some of the most incredible action scenes ever put to paper, and an explosive, gut-wrenching conclusion you won’t soon forget — Nocturnal is the most spectacular outing to date from one of the genre’s brightest stars.
“NOCTURNAL will make the end-of-year favorite lists for mysteries, thrillers, science fiction, horror, and yes, just plain old fiction, period. If you are a fan of genre fiction, you have to read NOCTURNAL.” Joe Hartlaub, BookReporter.com

Pingback: Nocturnal Sigler Amazon | Great Smiling Experts
Hi Scott,
I’m sure you get asked this all the time, but will there be a sequel to Nocturnal or a book set in the same universe? I really loved the book and hope it becomes a series!! Love all your books!!
There are two sequels and one prequel stuck in Scott’s noggin, but none are currently on the schedule to be written, meaning they won’t see the light of day in 2015 or 2016. Perhaps after that, but no way to know.
Where can I buy the original nocturnal? I loved that story as it was. This version is amazing as well but it’s like two different stories.
The original version was a first draft, and is no longer publicly available.
Any chance it will make it to downpour? I see three Scott Sigler there now, so hopefully? (I am hopeful that Pandemic will make it there, too…)
Hi Michael,
My guess is that the books on Downpour are INFECTED, CONTAGIOUS and ANCESTOR. Those are books from Crown. They have a lot more pull than we do in the publishing world. A LOT.
I can tell you that our books (which include the audiobooks for NOCTURNAL and PANDEMIC) are exclusive with Audible, so I don’t think they’ll be on Downpour, I’m sorry to say.
It’s a simple economics question for us: there are two of us here at Empty Set, and if we do Audible, that gets us also on iTunes and Amazon. Between those three outlets we reach well over 95% of our audience, and maximizing the profit from those outlets and that 95% makes the most sense. The better we do, the more we can do. Plus, one upload and we reach 95% of our target market is much less work for me.
So, unless Downpour becomes a part of the Amazon empire, I don’t think we’ll make it there. We try to mitigate the fallout of those decision by always the free podcast option as well.
Yeah, it’s getting annoying. There is an FDO-shaped hole in my heart =(
Rawrrrrrrrrrr go kick audibles butt
Man, it is taking them forever, it seems.
Send them an angry note! Junkies are crashing, here!
=(
Is an audio version available to buy for download?
Sooooooooon. We’re just waiting for validation over at Audible, then it will be available on Amazon, iTunes and Audible.
You mention that the audio book is available on Audible.com but it doesn’t appear when I search for it. Is it delayed or am I just wrong?
Long time junkie, the first taste was all I needed, now I want more and I want to pay for it =)
@Niels: It’s been submitted to Audible and iTunes. We could get approval any day now, and we’ll be sure to holler when we get it.
Come on, it’s almost November. I need my fix I am too bored to go on.
@Heather: It’s coming Oct. 27!
Dude! I so cant wait for the podcast of this to drop! I missed hearing the first draft of this before it was pulled, and have been thumb twiddling ever since!….. Please tell me it is going to be you who narrates it…. Your previous podcast works have been ‘Peak’, and am really looking forward to your ‘Sigler narrative’ once again..
Thanks for making books amazing for me again, and my working week worth living for once more.
It’s October! I needs to buy this now!
Soon, Junkie … sooooooon …
I need to know when in October. Don’t want to miss it.
We don’t have a fixed date yet. Just watch the feed!
Do you have any idea where I can check out the nocturnal podcast? I would really like to check it out
Mario, it should be in the feed sometime in October, probably toward the end of the month. November at the latest.
Does anybody know what had happened to the Nocturnal podiobook??
I downloaded it a wee while back and listening now, I’ve discovered I’m missing a few chapters! Absolutely distraught
Hey Erin. We pulled the old version because it was a first draft of the novel. We should begin podcasting the new version of the audiobook in October.
Ah! Brill, thank you very much
When in October. I don’t want to miss it. I didn’t get to finish it due equipment failure. Now I have all kinds of devices ti listen to this awesome story on!
One word…. Interesting…
… and plenty of food for thought in this episode.
Stay Alive – NC
Descendants
As for the speculation above, I concur with Belladonna420. I don’t think Scott was dropping an Easter Egg about the eponymous antagonists of the as-yet incomplete book, DESCENDANT. Though, I think it’d be awesome of he did do something like that. But the Prawat, as I currently imagine them, are likely to be more mechanical, or perhaps some blend of biological and mecahnical, based on what Scott said in this current episode. That’s my take, at least.
Taxonomy and Phylogeny
Scott, this latest episode of THE ALL-PRO is one of my favorites so far! Finally, some nitty-gritty taxonomy and explanation of some of the other races we’ve heard mention of. I was wondering if the Dolphins were really dolphins, or if that was just a nickname. Now we know. Also really dug the discussion of the Prawat and other forms of artificial life.
I’m an evolutionary biologist, so this shit’s right up my alley. Keep up the great work!
In this case,
I think the FDO is simply referring to a descendant in the literal sense – “something deriving in appearance, function, or general character from an earlier form”.

Interesting
FDO you sneaky fiend I think I might have heard a refrence to descendant in this epi being that the (i hope im spelling this corectly) prowat race are the descendants and are discovered in 2015. this also could point to the release of the book being 2015
