The Hunterson’s new home is invaded by a pot-smoking Deadhead wizard, but what else would you expect from a paranormal San Francisco? Hunter’s family has to deal with the previous residents of his new mansion, while Hunter also has to deal with his deadbeat son — who might or might not actually be a demon that spends way too much time shopping on Amazon.

When do we get a Hunter Hunterson big story…the short stories are great.
@bigun123: Somewhere down the road, I suppose. There is a big HH&S story coming out in the Charlaine Harris “Games Creatures Play” anthology that hits on April 1, 2014: http://www.amazon.com/Games-Creatures-Play-Charlaine-Harris/dp/0425256871
(I tried posting this yesterday, trying again from a different computer.)
As a queer person…Freddy actually leaves me with an uncomfortable feeling.
Whilst I understand what was being attempted here – a subversion of expectations, it fell flat.
He’s a limp-wristed, lisping, fashion statement – traits that are associated with the image of a flamboyant gay man – traits that Freddy both claims as fairy traits and hates the gays for stealing (as if The Gays are a monolith or have a single point of cultural reference).
(Or perhaps a queer ruling council that passes down this month’s behaviours and fashions :P).
It fell flat because whilst having the appearance of commentary, it said nothing, and ultimately just left us with a “stereotypical flamer” who just happened to be a homophobe.
(And homophobic gay people do exist – it can be denial, self-hatred, or a combination.)
And whilst different cultures have different standards for “manliness” – where’s the disconnect in the fairy culture that when they use this pattern of behaviour, it’s manly (and will get them that sweeeet pussy), but when a gay person does it, they’re just a faggot? Wouldn’t the emulation be something they admired? Imitation is considered to be the sincerest form of flattery.
Is Freddy in fact speaking for his people when he makes seemingly objective statements from the fairy point of view, or is he in the minority?
What happens to actually gay fairies? Do they have an inverse stereotype to act to (something closer to a bear?) or are they simply killed on sight?
Was there a significant fairy culture in SF that has dwindled, allowing Homosexual Industrial Complex to mimic them? Or did they just infiltrate the fashion industry to try and make a quick buck off unsuspecting humans?
Grace,
Hooo, there’s a lot to digest here. Let me tackle it point by point (mostly).
As a queer person…Freddy actually leaves me with an uncomfortable feeling.
I hadn’t seen this coming, but it is understandable.
He’s a limp-wristed, lisping, fashion statement – traits that are associated with the image of a flamboyant gay man – traits that Freddy both claims as fairy traits and hates the gays for stealing (as if The Gays are a monolith or have a single point of cultural reference).
The angle here is that many cultures come up with their own styles, styles that are then assimilated into a larger popular gestalt. This can range from affectations of speech patterns to seeing dubstep suddenly show up in car commercials. Within the context of the story, Freddy is claiming that his kind invented that style of speech and clothing, and that it was adopted by another local culture. Is Freddy correct? We might never find out.
It fell flat because whilst having the appearance of commentary, it said nothing, and ultimately just left us with a “stereotypical flamer” who just happened to be a homophobe.
I see your take, and I disagree. The commentary here is that the attitudes of hate and pre-judgement are not limited to the Rednecks of the world. I live in San Francisco, and the amount of hate that is cast at people from the South (Texas, in particular) is staggering to me. Some people here who bang the drum that no one should judge you on race, gender or belief have no qualms about blanket statements against what they see as homogenous groups — to me, it’s the same thing as deriding “the blacks” or “the gays” as some uniform class with only one kind of people. So, Freddy is an over-the-top character and he is definitely comic relief, but he represents the idea that everyone from all walks of life can be a judgmental prick. The fact that he looks like one thing and acts like another is part of the point.
(And homophobic gay people do exist – it can be denial, self-hatred, or a combination.)
Just like white-hating whites can exist, black-hating blacks, etc.
Apparently not, in Freddy’s view. Perhaps we have to meet more of his kind to find out the larger perception.
Is Freddy in fact speaking for his people when he makes seemingly objective statements from the fairy point of view, or is he in the minority?
At this point, we don’t know. One could probably assume he’s no more representative of his kind than the racist white dude down the street is representative of all white people.
What happens to actually gay fairies? Do they have an inverse stereotype to act to (something closer to a bear?) or are they simply killed on sight?
That’s a damn good question, and fodder for future stories.
Was there a significant fairy culture in SF that has dwindled, allowing Homosexual Industrial Complex to mimic them? Or did they just infiltrate the fashion industry to try and make a quick buck off unsuspecting humans?
This is a supernatural tale. Like many supernatural tales (a-la BUFFY, SUPERNATURAL, HARRY POTTER, ANGEL, etc.). the well-developed mystical world is set within our day-to-day mundane world. The fictional conceit is that there may very well be a world like this going on around us, but we don’t see it. So evaluating whether the Fairy culture dwindled is kind of irrelevant, just like trying to figure out if the Stomper community in Slayerville, KY, is up or down and how the level effects the Mundanes of that area.
This one is one of my favorite stories; thanks in a big way to Freddy
Great pictures Bruce! I am starting to save now for SiglerFest 2014!!
I keep having images of goblins doing syncronized swimming. It is just weird. Love it.
I take it Freddy is loosely based on Frederico, or the other way around?
Nope, Freddy is based on a crazy mashup of a homophobe and Freddy Mercury. As if such a thing could ever exist.
Links to Siglerfest stuff in show notes?
They are there now. Sorry about that, and thank you for pointing it out.
Freddy the homophobic fairy. yes, so much yes. couldn’t stop laughing
Heh. I hope Freddy is a recurring guest role.
