The story is told that when Daoud visited Moscow in April 1977 and
Brezhnev berated him for failing to implement land reforms, support his
Asian collective security proposal, show appreciation for Soviet aid,
and keep communists in the government, Daoud icily replied, "I am the
president of an independent country and not a member of your East
European bloc." As he stalked out, Daoud's aide whispered, "You've just
signed your death warrant."
