Dolphins and Rugby

Anyone remember the dolphins from the first book? The intro got me thinking are the Prawatt dolphins or are they ret-conned?

Also I was wondering why the FDO would choose Legue over Union, I thought the Ki would be all about the heavy contact rather than a running game.
