ED: The "secondary" refers to defensive backs. So if you look at the line of scrimmage, the offensive line faces the defensive line. Behind the defensive line are the linebackers, usually two or three players. Behind them is the "secondary," which are "defensive backs," guys whose primary responsibility is defending the pass. The "secondary" consist of cornerbacks, who play out on the far side, a strong safety, who plays fairly close behind the linebackers, and a safety, called such because he is the last line of defense.
