There are ways to leave stuff (property, a business) that require liquidation after the last surviving member is dead. My great grandfather did that with the family business - once his last child died, everything had to be liquidated. There were plenty of grandchildren involved in the business, but that was what happened. He was a little bit of a control freak, I guess. And with IP you should be even more so...
