said: I like what Trevor is saying here.-  gives series, place in series, year of start.  Uf a stardate system was going to be used I would include some alpha chars to break up the pattern at a glance though.  Any method would get confusing if the story jumps around or begins with some kind of flashback or foretelling - more if it was not going to be obvious to the reader at first and needed to be unfolded.
