Bill, I'm now 12 chapters into the book and have heard enough of Dr. Jack to comment. The accent works. I'm not sure what a Texan might say, but regardless, it doesn't distract or sound like you're laboring through it. So, I think what probably matters is what you intend to communicate through the soapbox. You may be able to take a little more license if you do this as Jack, since he's a fictional character. If you want to stretch the limits of conventional thought, that might be the way to go. Otherwise, I think the easiest thing to do to communicate is just use your own voice. Either would work for me!
