I'll let the FDO do the formal response, but this is my take.
As a humble junkie... Scott has made it abundantly clear in all of his dealings with the publishing industry that this is is business model. It's what's gotten him this far, and it's what will carry him into the future. It's non-traditional, that much is true, but he's proven the viability of this model and he's sticking with it. There's a reason we're still getting free content even though he's got a major multiple book deal with a major publisher like crown. He insisted on building it into the contract and it's a trend he's committed to continuing. When it comes to printed content, it gets a bit murkier, as the publishing company has a larger say, but even with infected he was able to swing a pdf...
