Me: Hey Steve (my co-worker/temporary boss), I just want you to know that I'll be late to our staff meeting on Thursday at 9am.

Steve: Oh?

Me: Yes. I have... something I need to take care of.

Steve: Ok. How long do you think it'll be?

Me: (run fingers through hair, grab back of my hand, sigh heavily)  Hoo. Well, I'm not sure how long it'll take.

Steve: Ok, well, try to make it afterwards if you can.

Me: We'll see how it goes. No promises.
