How's the DT's, Junkie?

As I told y'all in NOCTURNAL Episode #11, we're on hold for Episode #12. I'm working on the INFECTED audiobooks - what a frickin' project this is. It's 347 pages from the hardcover, all of which will be in the free podcast, plus 30+ pages of new shite that will only be on the pay-for audiobook. Unfortunately, this is a major priority and NOCTURNAL has to wait until it's done. INFECTED podcast begins in March.

ROOKIE HITS #1

This is fun stuff, THE ROOKIE hit #1 at Podiobooks.com's Top 10 list. This used to be an easy thing to do, to hit #1 there, but some podcast authors are really stepping up their game, people like Mur Lafferty and Nathan Lowell.

The chart graphic shows ROOKIE at #1, BLOODCAST at #3 (it's already on it's way down the charts), and a surprise appearance by the Grand Old Man of podcast novels, EARTHCORE at #10.

Lowell, in particular, pisses me off, because the guy clearly has no life and writes even more than I do. In fact, if I have zero life, this dude must have negative life. Maybe he's a demon? A young-adult scifi writing, podcasting demon from hell. If you've got teenagers (or you are a teenager, for that matter) who like scifi, you can't go wrong with this guy's stuff.

BIG PIMPIN' WITH DOCTOROW:

This is a cool thing for me. Cory Doctorow is a hero of mine, a fight-the-power type scifi writer that has paved the way for many of the writers that give their stuff away. He's also a big player at the Electronic Frontiers Foundation (EFF), an organization that you should look into if you want the internet to remain an open creation and not be controlled by the big corporations. Anyway, enough kissing of C-Doc's ass, it was a thrill for me to go to the Amazon.com link to his new book LITTLE BROTHER and find Amazon paired it with INFECTED for a "better together" promo. This is relatively meaningless, all automated, and just means that people buying my books also tend to buy Cory's books -- but still, I took it as a badge of honor and I'm fired up. It's neat to be linked at those levels. Yes, that's right, your Future Dark Overlord™ said "neat."

FWIW Infected/Infection was far and away the worst story you've presented. I know you are working on an audiobook for it, and hey- if you make some money great, but i'm telling you as a real fan that that book was kinda weak compared to everything else which I have really enjoyed. I get the Junkie thing but for me it's kind of a joke as I don't really crave the next chapter I just want to continue something I started (listening to your book). In the past, the more interupted a book is, the more sporadically it is released does greatly affect my impression of the work when I'm done. I think you can get away with this once or twice (at the most) during a longer novel. But you do owe people some extended shows (which is just more work anyways, so why not cut something 30 mins or so regularly, hey- it's 30 mins). If you see people listener stats level off or not grow at a steady progression, this could be one reason why. Oh well, I know i'm bitching, but also trying to give real feedback as someone who's listened to everything you've done. The 1st book I listened to after it was completed and it was still the best experience, because it wasn't interupted by the schedule of your life. I love podcasting and podiobooks. But a 12+ day interuption of content is worse than any commecial break I could think of. FWIW in closing, I do like this current book, but I'm not sure if I actually like it or am just interested in the story because the chapters have been released almost amaturely, irregularly with little regard (other than sarcasm and over inflated egotism) for listeners. The more podiobooks out there, the more authors that release this way (your welcome btw- from me and all the listeners "junkies" who have put you on the map btw) the less we listeners and users are going to have to put up with this sort of cessation of content. If you are too busy, I get it, ask for help, get someone to help you produce, get PW or somebody in SF to help ffs, it actually makes the story suck more when its broken up so much and irregularly. peace out- keep writing, start podcasting! PS- I do like your vampire novel btw

The extra content is only in the "Director's Cut" audio version. About 22-30 pages of goodies and added scenes. Not in the hardcover, not in the free podcast. Keep in mind the whole book has been re-written, so there is a butt-load of new stuff in the hardcover. We just added these other scenes so there would be SOME incentive to buy the audiobook.

Crown countered that they had to sell the audiobook, it's part of their revenue model, and how could they do that if the damn audiobook was free? That's where we came up with "INFECTED: The Director's Cut" which is the whole hardcover podcast, plus a bunch of scenes that added to the backstore.

Audible will be carrying the Director's Cut. I'm not a fan of Audible, not at all, after they forced Apple to kick EARTHCORE off of iTunes, but your Future Dark Overlord is picking his battles carefully. Take the high ground first, then the ports, then cut off supply lines and choke out the enemy before you sweep into the valleys and destroy them all.
