What movies do you Junkies take the time to watch?

What new movies have you seen lately, and what do you love or hate about them?

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children

SlackerQueen's picture
Its technically considered a movie for some reason...

Serenity

One of the best scifi movies to come along in a very long time. I also love anime - Cowboy Bebop being one of the best series. And anything Miyazaki. How about Tony Jaa martial arts movies? Anyone ever see Ong Bak? Not much of a story, but the action is incredible.

Here are a few.

JP's picture
OK, these are most definitely favorites, but only in a particular category: movies that cause you to have to think about what's "real" in the context of the movie. Kind of like that first time you ever saw Wizard of Oz--the ending was a bit of a surprise--was it all just a dream? So here are a few for adults: Mulholland Drive (2001, by David Lynch), eXistenZ (1999, by David Cronenberg), The 13th Floor (1999, by Josef Rusnak), Donnie Darko (2001, by Richard Kelly), and Jacob's Ladder (1990, by Adrian Lyne). Not an exhaustive list, but these are a few. And I promise--there's a list of much more normal movies too!

Donnie Darko was cool

another good one like that is fight club and M night shamamalamalan(sic)'s first few movies
Nate Dogg... "life is hard. But it's one helluva lot harder if you're stupid"- -John Wayne

Open Range, No country for

Open Range, lead character with a violent past that manifested itself when the brave were needed, No country for old men because it was so purely raw in it's reality and brutality, and Last of the Mohicans-with the best love story and most kickass fighting i can recall in film...,but lonesome dove is my faveWinkΔΔΔ Just because I kiss the prettiest girls and drive my truck too fast, why does everbody want to kick my ass

Not bad...

SynapticJam's picture

Not the best movie of the year by far, but overall enjoyable...  parts were slow, parts were "why are you doing that?" parts had some really good special effects...  Samuel Jackson was very good in it...  Worth at least a rental...

For a movie you probably wouldn't see, but maybe should

SynapticJam's picture
Strings..... I dare you... rent it.... I double dog dare you. Watch it and then let me know what you think..... It's like Team America.... just without the Team America.... Dark and almost sinister Not a comedy by any stretch... more of a drama/action/tragedy type of movie... Team America meets MacBeth... and MacBeth kicks the crap out them. All the characters are marionettes... but they're so well done, and the strings are actually part of the movie that it fits... and even works..... Kinda freaky at times.... By the end you'd swear they were moving their lips... really freaky that way.... imagine living your life with strings connected to your body that went all the way up to heaven.... How could you tell where you end, and I begin.... This missive brought to you by SynapticJam - hhhmmm... tastes like chicken

Lately? Well, I've watching

SlackerQueen's picture
Lately? Well, I've watching the Castle of Cagliostro for a while (Lupin the 3rd anyone?) Quite an interesting movie, since it is by one of my favourite directors, Hayao Miyazaki , which is why I love it. The only thing I hate about it is the main character's(Lupin) personality is quite different from the way he is normally portrayed. (Holy shit, the site background is blinding white...nearly had a freakin' seizure) "We may have days, we may have hours. But sooner or later, we all push up flowers..." -Grim Fandango

I really like Miyazaki as well

SynapticJam's picture
I think his films have a vision associated with them and he does a great job of bringing them to life. The characterizations are great too... This missive brought to you by SynapticJam - hhhmmm... tastes like chicken

KAWKAW!

Faust's picture
SAW films, anything anime (bar mecha stuff), Shortbus, war films and I hate chick flicks unless I'm really upset about the lack of a Sigler episode (in which case its on Siglers head when I commit suicide due to the chick flicks infesting/ infecting my mind)

Lately?

SynapticJam's picture
Not a damn thing... haven't had a chance to go the movies for quite a bit... Always seem to be running hither and non... If you're in the mood for a mostly brailess, mostly plotless action flick with a few good guffaws, try Shootem' Up.... Had me chortling a few times... All Movies

wallerdad's picture
I pretty much like all movies, I do the Blockbuster at home thing and I'll get 6 movies a week from them. 3 in the mail and 3 at the store, Then I burn a copy of each one, getting a pretty large collection so far. My kids love it because I have most of the kid movies. mostly foreign

Monty Grue's picture
I rarely watch movies anymore. They're just just not worth the time. My wife and I subscribe to Netflix, but only get 1 or 2 movies per month. Over the last six months or so I've liked (not all are recent): Veronica Guerin (UK) The Last King of Scotland (UK) Match Point (USA) Elling (Norwegian) The Lives of Others (German) La femme Nikita (French) Run, Lola, Run (German) Black Book (Dutch) The Call of Cthuhlu (USA) Zelary (Czech) Charlie Wilson's War (USA) I was disappointed with: Ravenous (USA) Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (USA) Knocked Up (USA) The Host (Korean) Fracture (USA) Black Sheep (New Zealand)

Disturbia

freakazoid101's picture
I did prefer the original Rear Window (even though it's "not a remake"), but it was very good. I think because when I saw it, it had been the first movie in a while that I could watch with my boyfriend and both of us actually watch it. I swear to god he did not exist while that movie was on. *~* My thoughts this week: Waiting is an essential part of junkie life. John Barrowman has amazing teeth and he hugs well good. I love him so much. What a waste.

Transformers is the one

SlackerQueen's picture
Transformers is the one movie I don't mind watching over and over, even if my brain turns to mush I don't think I'll stop watching it. "We may have days, we may have hours. But sooner or later, we all push up flowers..." -Grim Fandango

I found myself really enjoying transformers

SynapticJam's picture
I didn't really know what to expect when I went to see it, but somehow it was more than I expected. It wasn't just robots run amok... I really liked the casting... They did an excellent job with it. Some of the story changes tweaked me a bit, but they weren't enough to ruin the movie.. Overall, really well done. This missive brought to you by SynapticJam - hhhmmm... tastes like chicken

*waits for the slams to come...*

I personally enjoyed "Oh Brother Where art Thou.... I am Matthias the Groveler, Qyuth Warrior dedicated to the rise of the Sigler Empire, and resident lurker on the forums....

No slam!

JP's picture
That movie's hilarious! Based on Homer's "The Odyssey." I love Ulysses' description of the Devil: "Well, there are all manner of lesser imps and demons, Pete, but the great Satan hisself is red and scaly with a bifurcated tail, and he carries a hay fork."

See, now that's making literature fun!

Stuff I'll watch over and over..

Gmork's picture
There are a core set of movies I can watch over and over. Herere a few.... Chronicles of Riddick Original Star Wars trilogy (Any one of the three but Empire is the best!) Blade (either the first or the second) LOTR (any one of the three movies) The Blues Brothers Aliens Van Helsing Independence Day Tremors Roadhouse Stargate The Princess Bride (what! the man in black rocks!) Pitch Black ___________________ $DO || ! $DO ; try try: command not found

Excellent list!

SynapticJam's picture
I've got most of them at home and watch them constantly too. Actually, I've watched Antitrust quite a few times too... excellent flick... I'd probably add Fletch to the list too... Spaceballs... That's another one... This missive brought to you by SynapticJam - hhhmmm... tastes like chicken

How the..

Medri's picture
How could I forget The Princess Bride and the other stuff on your list?? Oh and not to mention Deep Star Six and Deep rising. Btw love your signature. Oh a PS is that if y'all like the action/thriller sort of thing.. watch Right at your Door... such a fun film. Or perhaps Re-Animator series.

The Tremer's movie

Delhome's picture
The Tremer's movie series.... LOTR.... the movies that play in my brain..... uh....sci-fi/horror.....yeah.... I am Matthias the Groveler, Qyuth Warrior dedicated to the rise of the Sigler Empire, and resident lurker on the forums....

Semitheo's picture
I'd go see anything that was written by stephen King. i also love horror movies. Like the original Halloween. -------------------------------------------- gothguy720.deviantart.com

Went to see I AM LEGEND....

ogreoregon's picture
My favorite character was the DOG.....what a great pet/hunting dog. loved the scenery and strange plot.

i LOVED that dog

treed's picture
the movie was fantastic although some of the fans of the book did not like the fact it didn't follow the book closely enough i enjoyed I, Robot as well, but the movie and the book have only the title and SOME (read that as very few) plot elements and characters in common (but are treated WAY differently) the voices liked the book better (even though it was written in the 50's)* It's all about the Numbers, my friends The Math god

Yeah, Book VS Movie...

ogreoregon's picture
I usually try to read the book first, but if not, then I still make sure I read the book later. There is always so much MORE in the book. I try and think of movie versions of novels as different storys altogether, and while watching the movie ,if I have read the book, totally get into it so that I am not constantly comparing them. That is like all the movies using Phillip K. Dick's fiction. Bits and parts, not all total story lines used , but the theme is recognizable. And in Dune, there was so much detail needed to understand what was going on it was much better having read the books first. Things that were not in the movie but understood by fans who had already read the novel.

Dune

Shadygirl's picture
Have you seen sci-fi channels Dune mini-series? They were able tell a lot more of the story in a mini series format. I have also heard that somebody is going to remake a Dune movie. I don't know many details on that.

A cowgirl is a woman with guts and a horse.

read first?

rivarij99's picture
I find it better to watch the movie first cuz i'm constantly noticing how much is left out that was in the book that could have really added to the story. In forest gump for example he actually became a pro wrestler. it was hilarious,in the book but not in the movie  ΔΔΔ    just because I kiss the prettiest girls and drive my truck too fast, why does everbody want to kick my ass

something has to give

treed's picture
the books are rich in detail that doesn't translate to or won't fit in film LOTR for example, Tom Bombadil didn't even rate a mention and all those songs, none made it or very few short stories usually translate better to film than novels, get more of the detail in i want to read i am legend before i saw the film, but that didn't happen, havent read it yet sometimes it is an advantage not reading before seeing, sometimes not I, Robot, did not matter since film was very different than book, similar theme in each, but story WAY different, and outlook was more sinister in film than book film (meaning hollywood), traditionally has always made computers and robots to be malovent in intent or in their execution of programmimg. i think how the book handle it was way more subtle and effective, would have made an equally interesting film if it had followed asimov's original story line as far as what the computers were trying to do or were doing * It's all about the Numbers, my friends The Math god

I agree with you on LOTR

SynapticJam's picture
Even with the few changes they made though, LOTR was really close enough to the books that they complemented each other. Legend didn't complement. I did like the movie though... for what it was... I think my favorite character was the manican in the red hat... But WHY! Why kill the dog? Lock it up until you can find a cure... And "do not display any human characteristics"??? Let me see, he's their boogie-man, he killed the one zombies girlfriend/mate, they set an elaborate trap for him... hhhmmm... given some time, they might even develop into a normal society.... This missive brought to you by SynapticJam - hhhmmm... tastes like chicken

Action please

timmyswim42's picture
Anything with the military or special ops or anything along those lines i will watch. Pretty much a big battle satisfies my movie cravings. Lord of the Rings type stuff not so much but it'll do. Also anything like "Fight Club" "28 Days Later" or "The Boondock Saints"...(by the way, best movie ever.)

I was surprised at the military action in transformers

SynapticJam's picture
It was actually really well done... Nothing like a C-130 gunship strafing a ground position.... This missive brought to you by SynapticJam - hhhmmm... tastes like chicken

As long as the movie has any

outofcheese's picture
As long as the movie has any of the following in it, I'll watch it: - aliens - a gruesome death (or two..or a million) - a really evil baddie - Russell Crowe - comedy not centred around bodily functions - creepy, scary things - mythical/fantasy creatures If the movie has Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie or Al Pacino in it, I avoid it at all costs. --------------------------- thirdworldCHILD

Transformers....

I WANT to see the movie based on the book Battle Royal but it's only in Japanese and I can't find it! If you haven't read Battle Royal you should. It's the greatest book ever! Not for kids though... "The spread of evil is the symptom of a vacuum. whenever evil wins, it is only by default: by the moral failure of those who evade the fact that there can be no compromise on basic principles."

Movies

Dancinpb's picture
The original Star wars. The Alien, and Preditor movies. Zombie flicks, I totally loved the 28...later movies. I like good Space, alien, monster movies. I also liked the Xmen and Spidermen movies. Iron Man looks good but we will see. I like the old Charlton Heston esque movies. The Omega Man, Soylent green, The Planet of the Apes. Good stuff. Also, Shamalan's Stuff, I think Unbreakable is my favorite from him, 6th Sense is the one i like least. Transformers I loved, to hear Optimus Prime's voice again, was way cool. I will watch other things but I really enjoy the scifi catagory most.

Personally, I can't wait for ironman to come out...
