The name "rocktopi" has to go.

A) They have six legs, not eight. Use almost any insect instead. Rockroach? B) Reminds me of Rock Lobster. Peppy '80s hit does exactly jive with this tale.

heck no, rocktopi has to stay

jannypie's picture

rocktopi has to stay, it evokes the best mental image of what these creatures look like.

rock roach would be even more incorrect, since they neither have chitinous exoskeletons nor jointed legs. at least as rocktopi it connotates an invertebrate with tentacles.

and BTW- was i the only one who didn't get the B52s reference? i had to wikipedia it. "rock lobster" in my mind means Stephen King and the Gunslinger along the beach with the doors.

We must keep rocktopi

JP's picture
or else they'd probably have to be sextopi if the basis for naming is the number of legs rather than what the legs are made of. Sextopi? That's just wrong. We just went from scary to some of that bestiality that n8man is so fond of. (Not judging; just saying...)

Hey Ned! ;)

I know you like to cook as indicated by your ancestor fin soup recipe. Are you any good with desserts? A little Rocktopi pie? (Now that wouldnt have even be a possiblilty if werent for Rocktopi would it?)

yeah well

Pjotr NL's picture

since Rocktoπ are gelatinous I would make a bavarois out of them... Serve them with a some nuts or a caramel sauce... I mean everybody knows Rocktoπ, nuts and caramel (because of the "earthy" flavour that nuts) have is a great combination... and actually I am a professional chef in a kitchen not much different than the one Gordon Ramsay owns (you know the guy from hell's kitchen).

the Dromedary or Bactrian-based sauce? I hear one is clear while the other is creamy. I think either would go well with pasta and a bowl of good fin soup.

Hextopi?..

OK, let's think this one through

treed's picture
octopus, means 8 FEET or legs the OCTO means 8 and pus means feet sooooooooooooooo rocktopi (rockopus in sigular) would mean....... feet made of rock (and can we agree that METALS come from rocks), SOOOOOOOOOO the name totally fits ok now, do not expect me to defend this or explain any further, i am a teacher and that would be repeating myself, which i do not do....... (yea, right, mr. reed) * It's all about the Numbers, my friends The Math god

To contunie...

I would agree about the names. As for their appearance, its not horrifying to someone like me. But the smell of the creatures, that would be hell.

Fine with me

KnitWitch's picture
I like the name, it created great imagery for me when listening to and reading the story. I think they'll always be rocktopi for me even if a more formal name emerges in the course of the story. There so cute! - NOT!!! ------------ KnitWitch

rocktopi

Rocktopi is a good name but if we found out the real name in the new book that would be cool (tho id still call them rocktopi)

Rocktopi Stays

BillyB's picture
I mean it gives you an awesome mental image to connect with the creatures. Correct me if I'm wrong, but rocktopi isn't the name of the species but just what they were called by the humans in the book and Sigler as narrator. So, it's more of an imagery technique, right?

Definitely. You have hit the nail, man.

I'm fine with "rocktopi," BUT...

mspence's picture
Please, let's not forget that rocktopi is the PLURAL form. The singular would be rocktopus. A) Six, not eight? No problem. Ever since that K went in there, the "octo" idea was kaputski. B) You mean you can't envision the beasties boiling out of the ground, laying waste to the campsite, and slaughtering personnel right and left, all with the B-52s musically cavorting in the background?

The Irishman from Ohio"I

The Irishman from Ohio"I never Get to Get it!"-Wacko Warner I could see someone at the EarthCore or Earthcore site playing the B-52's in the background when the attack happened. The music would make it creepier. It might make the experience more alien, no pun intended. That's if it was made into a video or animation.

Rocktopi like the B-52s?

Rocktopi is definately a great name! I think the only name that could replace it would have to be "Rocktopussy" because that would just be hilarious.

How about frogfish?
