I like Asher. Only read one book of his, I'm trying to get through the "must read" guys one at a time before I go back and read more. Only problem is he has a "franchise character," so you know this guy will live, hence, there is zero tension in the books. If you know the main character is going to live, why bother?

i agree scott! If you know that a character is going to live, then there is no pleasure in reading the books. Unless the series is addicting like Stephen Kings THE DARK TOWER. That series drew you into research King's works since he connected almost half of his stories to it.
The way that Roland Deschain hops worlds and parallels King gets the reader enticed.
What i am talking about on the forums, is all hypathetical and theoretical...
No one knows where your going to take the story. ^_^

"I call bullshit!" That's what you should have said, because this is a great point. I loved the Dark Tower series (the first three were the best series I've ever read, the rest of them, not so much ... and I completely gave up when King wrote himself into the book).
So there's a series where I know the main character will live, yet I was riveted. I think the difference is that King has earned this from his fans because he will whack any motherfucker at any time -- you never know when it's coming. So even though we knew Roland would live, there was still that feeling that Eddie and Susanna could bite it at any second. They were also main characters.
So there's your answer, asshole. Dark Tower = good and suspenseful. James Bond books = good but not suspenseful, because you know he will live and save the day.

I agree that the later part of the series was cheezy when he wrote himself into the series, but at the same time the surroundings were always interesting. The callah in the fifth book, the various stores in new york, and the trail to the tower. All were brilliantly painted and his words.
I love the overall story. sure there are parts that sucked, but if you can tell me that you hated the story to the depths of hell after thinking about it.....well then .......i dont know what to tell ya
