Visual ergonomics for replies/conversations a possibility?

Paul,

How difficult would it be to either indent each reply a bit more or alter the color when a new conversation begins within a topic? Anything to make it easier to differentiate visually where conversations start and stop would be wonderful.

I've begun using the forums much more lately and that's my only real complaint. Everything else is stellar! Don't hesitate to contact me here or at home if you need more details. Thank you for doing this for our FDO!!! I can't imagine how much time & effort it takes to maintain/troubleshoot etc.

going to try some things out over at http://beta.scottsigler.com

Indenting is not a problem, but the color-solution sounds better - gotta try this.

Cheers!

http://beta.scottsigler.com/node/1568

Here is how it works: Every reply to the main post is blue, each Reply on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc.. level is green. Does this help? I could start looking into the datastructures of a reply to see if there are "children" beneath this one so i could also flag replies which have replies themselves in a some way. This could get messy thogh....

Cheers!

Re: Visual ergonomics for replies/conversations a possibility?

I think that does the trick if you do the childrens children thing you will have a real mess at your hands two levels are okay three may be but than it will get out of hand

Now also effective on the production site. Have fun!

P.S. There might be still some browser caching issues, so don't panic if it does not work out of the box for you. Try clearing your browser cache and restarting it. Might help.

I tried restarting my computer, which clears my cache & all my cookies out of my browser, but it still is not working anymore.

Re: Visual ergonomics for replies/conversations a possibility?

Just seemed odd that it would work initially and then cease to work. If I understood your explanation correctly, I think color coding each child would be the way to go. I don't think I've come across a forum topic that was more than 3-4 reply threads deep. If you stuck with the basic highlighter colors, I don't think it'd be messy, but website design/maintenance is your bailiwick. I'm the audio editor dude :D

Re: Visual ergonomics for replies/conversations a possibility?

...might be to simply add in a time stamp. That would let me deduce who said what when and figure out the comment thread that way. Not the most ergonomic, but it would avoid color messiness.

I just noticed that the site only displays "On (Month) (##th), (Year) (username) says:" . I assume it would be cake to add in time. If you decide to do this, please use military (24 hour) time. The AM/PM thing would be messier than multiple colors.

Re: Visual ergonomics for replies/conversations a possibility?

Better now?

But you also pushed me to think about a way better solution. The date thingy... I could store information when whch users visited which thread / posting the last time and mark the new content added after the last visit.

I need to think about it though, i can't store this data for each user for an infinite time, otherwise the dataamount would grow pretty fast (total users*total postings).

Cheers!

Re: Visual ergonomics for replies/conversations a possibility?

I'm most thankful that Paul took the time and made the effort to address this so quickly. I'm well aware that he's doing all this on a volunteer basis, the same way I do the editing stuff for the FDO.

And it is certainly an improvement. I'm simply attempting to offer suggestions on how it might be even better. Shouldn't our lair be perfect if we plan to take over the world?

I believe that too much communication is far better than not enough. So I throw ideas out there and Paul can use/implement the ones he likes and discard/ignore the rest.

The worst what would happen is me not responding to features I cannot implement. It's perfectly OK and I actually NEED good suggestions how to improve a site - especially when they are easy to implement like this ones.
