Strange & Unusual Pets
I recently decided to face my fear of spiders and bought myself a pet tarantula. Not only did I get over my fear, but I’ve become quite infatuated with them and have accumulated several more over the last few months.
My collection, as it’s called in the tarantula keeping hobby, includes mostly very docile species of tarantulas, a couple of which I handle on a regular basis. But my two most recent additions are considered to be more on the defensive/aggressive side. One is even nicknamed the “Orange Bitey Thing” by hobbyists!
Many of my friends think I’ve absolutely lost my mind, but some hobbyists keep hundreds of tarantulas at a time! For the record, I have no where near that number (yet).
So, I was just wondering if any other Junkies keep any exotic pets or if I’m the only one with a penchant for the strange and unusual?
Maybe if you hadn’t spent so much on your sick twisted pets you’d join your sick twisted friends at #SiglerFest2K13!
Ah… if only that was the case. Unfortunately, it’s things like mortgage and car payments keeping me from joining you and my other sick twisted friends at SF2K13. :’(
@Wolf, there aren’t many pets you can eat after they die. I think there’s a reason for that. :-/
I’m definitely not sleeping tonight. What’s wrong with a few piranha? At least you wouldn’t wake up trapped in a giant spiderweb one morning & be slowly digested by thirty ravenous fist sized spiders, they have 8 legs & fangs for a reason, RUN BELLA RUN …. x
I’m not actually a big pet person (I barely take care of myself sometimes, much less a pet, lol), but my friend gave me a tarantula molt skin once. =o
Tarantula’s are one of the cool things we have here. They are neat! They had some animal showing at the zoo once where they had various animals out of their cages. I remember being disappointed at the lady who wouldn’t let me pet the tarantula they had! =p
I’ve always thought a snake or iguana or something might be a fun pet, but they’re lots of work, and I just don’t think I’d be able to properly take care of them.
I’ve had piranhas on two separate occasions as well, @Twainy! If I had room for a big tank, I’d probably get more. But I love my little fang-babies! And I love the viciousness of their feeding responses. Probably why I loved my piranhas too.
@Insignificant_Blood_Splatter, tarantulas aren’t exactly a “pet me” kind of pet. LOL! But I do have one who absolutely loves to be held and walk all over me. If it were possible, I’ll let you pet her.
I think most pets keep their humans, @GJ. It’s just the way they like it.
Well, I think this “pet” should be the official mascot of the Siglerverse. Ladies, gentlemen and robots: I introduce… The Bobbit Worm.
I want no part of this and only ask to be left your Sigler swag when they eventually break lose and feast on your insides.
Have you thought about spray painting one, orange? Would that hurt or just annoy it? Though I’m not sure you’d WANT to annoy one. Never mind. LOL you are brave. I have a can of Raid in nearly every room and that’s for spiders barely visible to the naked eye. Shiver. x
@Twainy, I’m a Junkie! Did you actually think I wouldn’t have an orange tarantula?!
@JP “A mix between the Mongolian death worm, the Graboids from Tremors, the Bugs from Starship Troopers, and a rainbow.” PERFECT!!!
Not sleeping for the foreseeable future. Shiver! I figured if there was a way, you would have one. Now, how do we paint a number on his back? Did you name them? Little tarantula jerseys? Like people dress up their dogs for Halloween? I condone all sorts of spider torture. Sorry. x
I do name them. This is Cheeto. The pic really does her no justice, she’s actually bright orange.
And I have no intention of pissing her off any time soon. She’s what’s called a Starburst Orange Baboon Tarantula or OBT for short. In the hobby, however, they’ve been nicknamed “Orange Bitey Things” and I have no desire to find out why. :-/
Well, technically @JP, I don’t really know yet if she’s a girl or boy. She’s a “suspect female” until I get a good molt from her to check. But she definitely has attitude!
I only have 3 confirmed females but I refer to them all as girls until I know otherwise.
I talked to @arealgirl and she said the Bobbit Worm is the final round in Boby Maim at this year’s SiglerFest. That should be exciting!
Did you mean Body Maim? And I’m sure @ARealGirl said no such thing!
@Belladonna420 Can’t you just smell them? If they have perfume on, then they’re girls!
Silly @JP! Spiders don’t wear perfume! It irritates their eyes! ;-p
Silly @Belladonna420! How do you know? Have you smelled them all?
Really?! The Future Dark Øverlord is afraid of a few little spiders???
Hmm, don’t know if it counts as strange or unusual, except I have to explain to everyone what they are, so I guess they’re unusual, but I have Axolotls and Sirens in my fresh water fish tanks. I used to have a freshwater barracuda, but he died. =(
I’m working on building a saltwater tank setup (which will probably take years to complete) that I will eventually put sand sharks and sting rays into.
@Cat I’ve seen Axolotls at the exotic animal expos I’ve gone to. They’re pretty cool. I would definitely classify them as unusual.
That’s Kraken, BTW, the newest member of the family. Stoopid FLICKR ruined my first post. :-/
OK, I has not one but TWO dragons, bearded dragons that is. each 2 ft in length, very docile and very curious. they taste everything and watch everything. cats are curious but these guys will walk up to the cats and taste their fur. cats freak out.Anonymous October 25, 2013 at 2:19 am
Do Venus fly traps count… my apartment doesn’t allow pets, so they’re all I’m allowed for the moment.
I shiver at the thought of spiders, pardon me, VERY BIG SPIDERS. In my house. Just killed a large Wolf spider who had the balls to crawl on the wall next to me.
I do have rules. Spiders are only allowed in my house if I invite them AND they live in an enclosure! Although I have found myself becoming more lenient with “free range” house spiders. I’m more likely to scoop them up and put them outside than kill them now. I also recently found a “Fang Jr.” in my house. Just a fraction of the size of it’s mother, I put it in a small plastic container and have added it to my collection too.
