Rostov Oblast, Russia.
Ekaterina Serikova, an 87-year old female veteran of II WW was hospitalized because of dilated veins.
Doctors discovered five fragments of artillery shell in her chest and suggested a surgery to remove those as one of the fragments was dangerously close to her heart.
The woman firmly refused the operation claiming that the shell fragments are a dear memory of Stalingrad battle and the great victory (of USSR).
“I will live as long as long as I do. I am not scared of doctors’ prognosis. I will not remove the shell fragments as those remind me the days of war and the suffering of the people.”
