Firefly: Not quite scary (except for the Reavers) but certainly groundbreaking

They weren’t quite regular guns. Mal’s gun seemed normal, but it made some kind of electronic noise when he cocked it. I have no idea what it was supposed to mean, but no "regular" gun does that. ;)

It wasn’t even a full first season… and they showed the shows out of order…  made them screw it all up to fit their mold for the "target demographic"…  it really is a tale of woe…

they think fox IS REAL stupid

they start a series, a high quality scifi show, where they KNOW their numbers will be low, but loyal, and drop it after one or two seasons before it catches on with the general public, PLUS they don’t actively support it in their advertising

short sighted cocksuckers, oh wait thats fox news

    • Numbers are the keys that unlock the universe…

And stupid… they didn’t give the show its due and when they walk down the other path, they just don’t look back….  It may work for them, but as far as I’m concerned, they missed a golden opportunity…

What kills me is Fox didn’t even air all the episodes!  The fact that people STILL talk about the show, love the characters, discuss it in forums should make Fox say, "What the hell were we thinking??"  I do like the fact that "Kaylee" and  Inara are on Stargate Atlantis now.

    That is just to awesome!

The movie will rock even more once you know all the back stories… Some of them almost made me cry…. *sniff* *sniff*…. Jane ain’t a girls name… now Vera…. she is my favorite gun…..

    Original Browncoat here…. Own em’ all… Gotta… Love River……
    And Kaylie….
    And Zoe…..
Hell, even Jane – But not like that ya sissy boy… Like a man! the “Hero of Canton!”

Serenity was just as good, too bad Fox did’nt give the show a chance to find a bigger audience,
but Fox has a history of cutting good shows too early, example Freaky Links.

I agree that most BBC programming seems way more innovative than US works. Mostly, it’s because the cultural storylines are new to me. Than came Coupling (Friends but older and with funny accents and better storylines) and the Beeb no longer seemed to be tackling those things I didn’t get.

Firefly is the first show in a long time that took the American culture and made it interesting.

    That’s why I like Firefly.

the beeb has been trying to save money and have said something along the lines of they’re not planning on making many more new shows, and want to do more repeats. So…
But itv, channel 4 and five are still making stuff. Lovely trashy tv from channel 4! (i actually like some of these teen dramas now, like skins and nearly famous, very trashy but it sucked me in.) Controversial crap from five. Beeb wannabe itv. Or the million cable and satellite channels.

    anyways
i gave up trying to understand the why this program and mot that one long time ago
i prefer the programing from the UK over the US, of what i get to see anyway

I knew there were explosions, gunshots, but I think I just focused on “spaceship = non powder explosive weapons”.

Wasn’t there one other laser… “Heart of Gold”… which the cold-hearted baby-daddy had a laser mounted on the floaty car?

Firefly is one of my favorite TV series of all time (next to BSG) and Serenity still manages to entertain me after watching it many times.

Go out right this instant and buy the DVDs. Get Serenity, too, while you’re out there. Do not pass Go.

It’s crap like that which led to my household boycotting Fox.

If you want more Firefly, join the “Firefly for Firefighters” campaign. We’re buying special edition DVD’s of Serenity and Firefly box sets and donating them to firehouses across the country.

How does this help get more Firefly? Universal already said that the 2nd movie depends upon sales of the special edition DVD. I’m desperate and will snatch at straws. I’m like that.

“Firefly puts the best in the tradition of the Western in space with 6 shot laser pistols and cargo-rustlers.”
One of the great things about Firefly was they used regular guns. The one laser pistol in the series, a gun called the Lassiter, was the only laser pistol in creation and a collecters item.

One of my favorite lines in the show was by Zoe after Wash commented on a laser gun.
He said ” what is this a sci fi novel”
She replied ” Honey , you live on a spaceship”

Joss Wheton wrote some of the best dialog ever in that show.
Wish the Fox exec that canned it caught a terminal case of the crabs after that decision.

Fox tried their hardest to kill this show – in fact, they’re still trying (see http://whedonesque.com/comments/14429#more). Five years later & we’ve got a movie (maybe two soon!) and the fan base just keeps growing. Started out small but it just keeps spreading like an Infection…

Firefly is an absolute must see for Junkies. Watch the series then Serenity and you’ll be screaming at Fox for destroying the show. I love it when a channel starts a new series then plays the first episodes out of order. Dirty Bastards!

I adored Firefly! It cracked me up to hear them cussing Chinese. The dialogue and story lines were enthralling. BUTTT, since it’s not on anymore (*sob*), I have to go with BattleStar Galactica. I love that show! Can’t wait for the next season to come out.

never actually watched a whole episode but ive seen and heard good things

I saw Serenity a while ago when it just came out and i remembered liking it, but i recently saw it again, and it did not cease to amaze me. the dialogue is hysterical, the action is adrenaline pumping, and the overall feel of the movie is fun. i can definitely feel the “western in space” element in it. a sequel would be great, as long as they did it right. i wouldn’t want them to fuck it up, like most sequels do. I have yet to see Firefly, but I have wanted to for a while. I just haven’t had the time. regardless you can count me in as a vote for Firefly as a Junkie must see.

Profile photo of Alexander van Houten

I will agree that Firefly was innovative and a damn fun show, but I BSG is my top choise for junkie TV.
In the Galactica universe not only do you have what is mostly realistic technology, other then the jump drive and the lack of good heat shielding on the Rapters most of the hardware is very close to existant tech. You also have a kick as army of pissed off machines trying to drive the human race to extinction. What could be better TV for Junkies then 99.99999% of humanity wiped out. And on top of that they are not afraid to show good bloody deaths.

Profile photo of Brad P. from NJ

I put this on my list of Junkie-must-see-TV because it’s innovative, just like Siggie. He put American Football in space with aliens and and a drug-running mob… Firefly puts the best in the tradition of the Western in space with 6 shot laser pistols and cargo-rustlers. There’s even rumours that Serenity 2 (the sequel to the movie made by the characters in the TV show) is now in the works.
