Brain-Machine Interfaces

Saw the session by this guy at Duke University at Dragoncon 2009... Some of this was WAAAAY over my head. He gave a "refresher" on Neurobiology and then talked about the current research on Brain-Machine interfaces. Some funding by DARPA for prosthetic weaponry for soldiers... and then the stuff about mice and monkeys where they are wiring into their brains to measure and control individual neurons... While the audience was thinking "mind control" it seemed to me that he was more talking about creating a "body control" situation. Puppet-master, anyone? High tech, cool stuff. Visit their website at www.openprosthetics.org.

In the meantime, until they invent a prothetic weapon or a better replacement limb, they are working on using the technology for video gaming. They are working in an Open Source environment, so maybe some of you Junkies can help them out.

Re: Brain-Machine Interfaces
great Science Fiction movies about this kind of thing--brain-machine, or brain-virtual technology. My most favorite is called eXistenZ. It highlights this intersection of the human mind and virtual gaming technology. Pretty creepy movie; pretty intense. Check it out!

Same folks at Duke... they patented the "Ratbot" http://wireheading.com/roborats/nirvana.html

And can I get a monkey to do my treadmill workout?

" In 2003, we proved that, with the BMI, monkeys could make a robotic arm reach out and grasp objects simply by thinking about doing so. Just over a year ago, we demonstrated that a monkey could go even further: From the DUCN in Durham, the monkey was able to make a robot located halfway around the world walk on a treadmill by using her brain activity to control and guide it."
