I'm thinking that the sterility is caused by pheremones in the proximity to the queen (mommy) as is the case in social insects. Once you leave the nest you could reproduce if you had the equipment to do so. Unlike Marco gastineau, who had no genitalia.

We have the question of where Mommy came from. Does she produce an occasional female as a mutation? If so, Hillary may be the next in line. Or maybe one of the offspring like Rex or Brian mates with a non-zed female and if a girl is born... If this is how it goes, the story is going down a path that may suggest Rex will mate at some point and produce a daughter who takes over the task of reproducing the hive. Brian goes on as the new Savior. Or not...
Other possibility is that Mommy has been and always will be one-of-a-kind. If something happens to her, no more Nocturnals. (Wow, that's bitter-sweet.)
