That's a valid point but I think that after whatever goes down on the boat, all the Nocturnals will know to fear the man in black with the death bringing grin.  Ya know? 

The Nocturnals don't fear Erickson because he wears a hooded cloak...They fear him because they know what he's capable of.  I think Bryan's mask/outfit has enough of a style, and the mask gives it something identifiable to the Nocturnals, to become iconic.

Is Bryan making a good enough showing of himself?  From what I've seen so far, he hasn't been impressive enough to really garner that much fear of him...

The Nocturnals have lived in fear of Savior all their lives, and now they know Savior is out of the picture. Bryan's going to have to make his own reputation. You'll notice what happened to Pierre's fear of Pookie as soon as he realized Pookie was not the Savior. Bryan has a long way to go to achieve the level of death-dealing exhibited by Jebbediah.

And come on, Bryan has already whacked Clyde the Glyde and Bonehead. He shot Spidey all the fuck up. He beat Devil Dan in a brutal hand-to-hand battle. I'd say that ain't bad for his first time out. 

to fear Bry Bry. They could sense when the saviour was around and they can already sense that Bryan is one of the family. I'm sure they will be able to distinguish him from other Nocturnals as he gets more powerful.

its keeps with the general direction of the story.  things are changing in the internal mythos of Nocturnal.  the once invincible savior is now dead, sly leads the nocturnals and who the hell knows what hes got planned but i think we can garuntee that he doesnt plan on going back to quietly live in the underground caverns.  With Erickson died the last traditional Savior and with a new style of savior comes a new look.
