I'd actually think that they will, but mostly for defensive measures.   Once hatched, they are intrinsically geared toward timeline and goal.  Get the gate up and running...  Set down a perimeter for defensive purposes... Especially after the first failed attempt (assuming that was the first one, it's a big world)...  I would more likely envision different abilities being engineered into further iterations of the species... The ability to attack from a distance with ranged weapons perhaps... Take out those pesky gunships before they blow up the gate...  Or shield generation for protective purposes...  In the larval stage they're pretty much peaked out as far as growth and abilities, but once hatched, who knows...  Maybe a chameleon mechanism.  I'm actually almost having trouble understanding how they all got out to the "grove".  Did they hitchhike?

  If they keep changing into bigger badder creatures, maybe they eventually morph into the Ki.  We could have the first Ki linemen and then maybe the Texans could have a good running game.
