In the UK, it is still up there as one of (if not the) most ofensive words, but it also does not pack the sheer visceral punch that it does in teh US. It is often bandied about as a casual insult instead of the tactical argumentative nuke that it is exclusively for Americans...In any case, I think it is worth remembering that it is a character that is saying (or thinking) that word, not Scott himself. If it is true to the character, then it is permissible (if not wholly acceptable).
