A Junkie's thoughts on H-Town

Okay, all joking aside.  No bull. Here is what I think about the book signing adventure in Houston.

This is just me...

Quick background, I'm a Sigler fan from Minnesota.  Since the Sigler wasn't going to come to me, I decided I would have to go to the Sigler.

Arriving in Texas on Thursday, I met up with Donald and Richard.  These are two of the most dedicated Junkies I've ever met.  They opened up their home to me while I was there and it meant a lot to me.

Richard - You are a True Texan and I'm privileged to know you.  It was great being able to get to know you better.

Donald - You're a good man and I want you to know that it's appreciated even though it doesn't seem like it sometimes.

Tom - You're a character... that's for sure... Everything I expected you to be and more...  Glad to finally meet you.

As for the book signing, initially, I was worried the bookstore was going to be too small and wouldn't work well.

I was both right and wrong.  The store was nice and cozy and worked well for the most part.  the only problem is that it actually was a bit too small as we had about 75 people show up when they only had seating for 20-30 people...  Personally, I think it worked well, of course, I was in the front row and wasn't one of the junkies standing in the back.  The store had 60 books on hand and they sold out with customers calling for more too.  Very cool.  Exceptional even!  The junkies there were all personable and easy to get along with.  I realize a common or shared purpose does imbue camaraderie, but it was great to be able to mingle and get to know all the other junkies...

I honestly, didn't know what to expect from Mr. Sigler.  I had visions of him walking in the door, opening a book, reading for 10 minutes sitting down to sign books and then leaving.  That would have sucked...

But  Mr. Sigler was more than I ever could have expected.  From word go, he was as personable as he could be.

He took some time to talk to us, and then we had the Q&A...  He was much more forthcoming and honest than I thought he would be.  It was surprising.  Lots of excellent banter and dialog.  The signings went well.

We then went to a local establishment to "hang out" with Mr. Sigler.  The restaurant/bar was called Two Rows and wa actually, just about right as far as the kind of place we needed to be able to get together with "the author"  Unfortunately, we hadn't realized how many were going to be there, so seating was difficult, but through it all Mr. Sigler was gracious and took the time to talk to everyone, tell anecdotal stories, answer questions about everything from the publishing industry, to where he's at in his writing, to secrets about what's going to be happening in Nocturnal.  And no, don't ask.  I won't tell you anything, and neither will anybody else who was there.  Sworn to secrecy and all that.  Besides, if he's going to be cool enough to give us a glimpse, we're definitely not going to ruin the surprise...

He stayed with us for hours...  It was beyond belief how approachable he was.  I had a good opinion of him before, but this elevates him even higher.  He demonstrated the understanding that the junkies are integral to his success and that he's going to do his best to not become elitest in nature.  I was honestly thoroughly impressed.

To cap it all off, he allowed a few humble junkies to give him a right back to his hotel.  How cool is that...

The flight back was really nice.  Can't wait for the next one...

Anybody else who was there, feel free to post your honest thoughts, Just don't give any spoilers on the answers he gave about the current story...

Thank you for the opportunity.

One thing I've noticed is that Texans seem to prefer their given names.  Donald, Richard, Thomas...  More respectful.  It's refreshing... Thanks again...

Kill Tom Cruise as many times as you want to.  I'd have offed the annoying midget years ago if it weren't for the threat of Scientology hunting me down and making me scream while I die... slowly.  Never mess with a pseudo-religion's cash cow.

Kill Cruise; however, Tom Jones is off limits.  He's a total stud-meister.  I love him and his version of "Kiss" is one of the ringtones I created for my phone.  Don't mess with Mr. Jones or I'll have to hurt you.  *think I'd better dance now*

Re: A Junkie's thoughts on H-Town

It's not that Texans prefer their given name, it's that Minnesotans give an uninvited diminutive.
Every time I am introduced to a Minnesotan as 'Barbara' they immediately call me 'Barb'.  I've been adding "...ara" to that reply for years.
Example:
Mike says, "Barbara, this is my friend, Tom.  Tom, this is my co-worker, Barbara."
Tom replies: "Nice to meet you, Barb."
I say: "...ara.  Please call me Barbara.  Nice to meet you too, Tom."
And what the hell is it with 'color crayons'.  Like there's any other kind of crayons?  I've been here 17 years and still haven't figured that one out.

Re: A Junkie's thoughts on H-Town

Unfortunately because of the crowds, I didn't get a chance to really meet most of the OJs there, I was really hoping to swap stories and get to know people like Treed, Jam, Mumo, WD, and the list goes on. I think my other problem was that I brought along so many other people (10 in all) that I felt obligated to hang with them. When I got to two rows there was no seating left so I went to the bar and had a beer and headed out. Next time I will have to be a little more proactive and hunt down you other Junkies. That being said I think it was a great success and Sigler was awesome and very charismatic, just what a future FDO needs to be. ...Tsolo888 <AKA Cpt. Travis Ellis> - Out, Click here to Digg Infected

-spent most time with jam, mumo00, wallerdad and some junkies from austin at the pub-crawl. i went up and met a few others. everyone seemed kind of shy about their junkie names. so i really do not know who i met (I am bad with names) unless they gave me their junkie name. i met gatorrock (I think thats right, they guy who set up the pub-crawl). i wanted to meet more people whose junkie names i knew....
