I love The Rookie. It may be my favorite Sigler story, but I'm afraid it probably
won't be in print any time soon. Sigler's got the sequel to Infected coming out
next year, and I think the third in the series after that. I'm not sure an author
would want to put out more than one book a year.
First that would be a lot of work - writing and editing the other Infected series
books, editing the Rookie, plus his regular podcasting like Nocturnal, The Crypt,
whatever is next, etc. Not to mention his world domination planning time.
Second too many books at a time could possibly cannibilize his own sales. His
total sales may not be lower, but individual sales probably would be and one
very strong selling book would probably be a lot better for Scott at this point than two
books with good sales. Junkies will buy them both, but if the average consumer,
who doesn't know better yet, has two choices of new books by this great Sigler guy
they've heard about then the numbers for each book may be lower than if there
was just one choice for all the purchases to go.
Third, maybe the most important issue is that the Rookie is pretty different from
Infected. I know I was hesitant about The Rookie for a little while because I thought,
"A story about football - not a sports fan, no thanks." This is after listening to and
getting hooked on Earthcore and Ancestor. Now I know to trust the FDO. New fans
who have only read Infected might not realize this yet and may not be ready to try
him in a different genre yet, so it is important for Sigler to continue with the Infected
series while he is building his name in the bookstores. Ancestor could probably be
republished since it is closer to Infected than his other stories. Unfortunately this
probably means Nocturnal won't be in print anytime soon, either.
Publishing it under a psuedonym would be cool, but you've got the Key making a
cameo in Infected, possibly an even larger role in the sequels. And he probably
wouldn't do this until after he has published a few more books and is big. Infected's
Scott Sigler wouldn't want to compete with The Rookie's "Mookie Sigler" before he is
established.
Of course, I really don't know anything about publishing or anything I'm talking about, so...
Print THE ROOKIE !!!
Print THE ROOKIE !!!
Print THE ROOKIE !!!
Print THE ROOKIE !!!
Print THE ROOKIE !!!
And while you are at it reprint Earthcore and Ancestor.
Also print Nocturnal once that is done and maybe a little collection of your short
stories like the Bloodcast ones and Hero...
Edit:
Damn, thought I had registered in time to be an OJ
