Junkie Opinion: What should FDO™ do with non-story blogging?

Junkies, I'm looking for some feedback from y'all here. I have lots of stuff I like to blog about, like "Sigler Science" and "Scott's Blog of Fuck Yeah." I like to post these things because it's fun for me, and some people are interested in it.

However, the main function of this blog is to share stories. I want to make the main page cover three things:

a) The latest Sigler story podcast
b) Any major news related to the stories or my writing career
c) Any stuff for which I need help (driving traffic to AMC Blog, actions, missions, etc.)

I don't want to flood the main page with extraneous stuff, because when NEW people find my site I want them listening to stories and learning how to get the podcasts.

So, Junkies, I'm looking for your opinion. Should I combine Sigler Science and Scott's Blog of Fuck Yeah into one blog, one source where you can see all non-story-related items? Are those blogs better served as individual blogs to which you can subscribe? How can I best serve your needs?

Again, I want to offer these links, posts and opinions as something separate from the story feed. My job is to provide stories, that's my business, I don't try and pretend I'm this huge influencer with opinions that "matter" to the larger culture. I want people to be able to enjoy my work, but not suffer my opinions unless they actively seek them out.

Ideas?

Perhaps you could move them from your top pull down menu (Meet Scott) to their own sidebar link on the right where you have Flckr pictures and the search tool and stuff. They would be out of the way yet still very easy to navigate to. Just my $.02

Good Idea using the sidebar.

Should I have separate blogs? All one big extra blog?

Seperate them. You don't want to confuse some of us any more than we already are.

Make it one single blog.

We would still have the ability to subscribe to the mega-blog and know when updates are made.

Could set up three subscriptions:

1. Subscribe to mega-feed

2. Subscribe to just stories

3. Subscribe to extra content.

Then fans could separate out the important stuff from random jibber-jab, or they could get it all.

it works fine
one big feed that send it all
and smaller feeds for those who just want it seperated out

KISS it for us tech tards! Anything too complex will be confusing, so the easier the better!  Embarassed  But anything our FDO decides to do will be ok with me.  You are the master of all!

One sidebar, with links to all three RSS feeds? Is that simple enough?

Re: Junkie Opinion: What should FDO™ do with non-story blogging?

While I don’t mind one big bad blog, I can see how it would help sell books and hook more junkies to keep the main blog central to topics on story updates.

With that in mind, I like the idea of separate feeds with the main feed being updates on stories and the secondary feed being an amalgamated Sigler Science and Fuck Yes Blog.

Three further thoughts:

1)      I almost never use the drop down options at the top of the screen to access the AMCTV Blog, Science Blog or the Fuck Yes blog.  This is because for me, it is not intuitive to look under the category of “Meet Scott” in order to get to these blogs.  Also, the drop down options don’t allow me to tell when the blog has been updated.

2)      To the first point, it might be worth it to place some sort of mini menu on the main page that would allow for the user to see the recent topic updates in the secondary blog.

3)      Also separate RSS feeds might work as well. One of my favorite bands do this on their website having one feed for News updates and one for Gig updates.  Here is what their sub menu looks like:

RSS

If you want to see it in action, go to the site for the band Muse by clicking here.

Thanks for the opportunity to give some feedback!

Re: Junkie Opinion: What should FDO™ do with non-story blogging?

at my request. I would have never even seen this post otherwise. No idea how difficult establishing/maintaining an RSS feed is. That's Paul's bailiwick. If it's relatively simple, I'd do one feed for each blog AND one that included all of them. Let the junkies pick whichever one they want. I concur with Gmork about the top "Meet Scott" pull down. It might be useful for newbies, but it's worthless for ongoing users.

Expecting your junkies to have an opinion!!!!!  You know how meek we are! Smile  So I like the idea of the sidebar.  Not that I feel comfortable stating my opinion!

Sometimes I want to post about cool scientificy stuff, sometimes I want to blog about ridiculously awesome scifi stuff. Would you guys mind seeing both of these things in one blog?

Re: Junkie Opinion: What should FDO™ do with non-story blogging?
A lot of good thoughts here. My initial reaction was to say "Oh hit me with everything you've got" as its most likely that I'd subscribe to a mega feed, if it were to be available. But at the same time, I understand that not everyone shares that desire and might be overwhelmed by it, or simply bored by the posts they don't want. So, getting down to it, I think for conveneince of the consumer sake, the categorized All/Stories/Science/Fuck Yeah feeds would be most useful. I don't know what kind of work that would put you through, Scott with the cross posting and the like, but I think that would be the most user friendly to all users.
