It's been well established that reading to children helps encourage reading. My son and I read together all the time. I think if they are used correctly, audiobooks can be a great tool to help people get interested in reading.
Of course, the works of Sigler are less than ideal for getting children to read. Getting them to shit themsleves, that's another matter. [I think, therefore I'm right. -Hugo Rune]

It broadens their imagination and creative horizons.  Get's them interested in other genre works by a variety of authors.

It gives peeps a chance to read when they might not have the chance to sit down and read a book, and it also probly increases interest in reading.

I would agree with Mark YN and Jim Dale (Harry Potter narrator) that is good for reading. It helped me find books my sons and I like to read. I also am more likely to try books that are not Science Fiction or fantasy,  at  least  from  the  library  or  podcasts.

I think it does encourage people to read, some even to write/record their own short stories.
