All I Want for Xmas/Hannukah/Kwanza/insert gift-giving festival

I don't really have a lot of ideas for my Christmas list. We usually don't go hog-wild on shopping for the adults, but take care of the kids. But I was thinking of asking for a Kindle or ebook reader. Anybody have something besides a Kindle that they would recommend? The cnet reviews seemed to put Kindle at the top of the heap.

Anyway, what do YOU want to find under the tree, in your stocking or wherever this season?

I have a Sony eReader. An older model (prs-505) and it works perfectly well. Doesn't have the wireless downloading of books, but i think the newer versions might have it. The one i have i really like so i can imagine the newer versions are even better (i could be wrong tho, never know). Price wise they are close to the Kindle i believe now. More or less probably most of the major ereaders (Kindle, Sony, Nook) would work well, tho most ebooks cost around the same price as print books (paperacks are around the same price in ebook form, but the hardcovers books are cheaper in ebook form).

I'd say check out some websites (Amazon, Bestbuy.com places like that) and check out user reviews for the different ereaders.

Hope at least some of what i said is helpful.

It's good to get some first-hand info.

I do so much at home surfing the internet on my iPhone that I kill the battery all the time.  I want to keep as much of my stuff in the same family.

While it doesn't have the sexiness and capabilities of an iPad, it does read just like a paperback book.

Some Kindle Pros:

  • Lightweight
  • Fits in my purse (better than most books would)
  • Reads **wonderfully** in direct sunlight (not sure how an iPad compares there but I can't imagine that direct sunlight would make for a pleasant reading experience on that screen)
  • Direct downlaods are free - no data plans and such
  • Holds over 1,000 books and your personal archive on Amazon makes it easy to manage what is kept locally on your Kindle
  • You can read your Kindle purchases from the Kindle app on any mobile device, on your computer and most recently they've rolled out reading on the web -- all of which can be synced with Kindle
  • People can gift you Kindle books now -- Have an Amazon wishlist? Just include Kindle books and people can gift them to you!

The only con is that it is not backlight so nighttime reading does require an external light source (lamp, clip on light, etc).  After all of that I sound like an advert for Amazon but really, I'm just a happy 2nd Gen Kindle user.

And I was just trying to figure out how to gif my Dad a Kindle book for Xmas - he's getting one too. I was a little worried about being "locked into" one vendor, but I doubt Amazon is going away anytime soon.

That must be a pretty recent addition. I have to go move some items from my private wish list to public!

And now I can fill up my Wish list so people can buy me more ebooks. Schwweet!

I don't know about the rest of you with Sig. Others, but how it works at my house is I find what I want and send the Big Guy a link and then I usually have to wrap it. But I always LOVE what he gets me. (This was instituted after he FORGOT to get me anything for Christmas... twice!) So Kindle is on the way and I have The Starter to get me started. w00t!
