To answer the question above, I would have to agree with billytal3nt3d, 'Out of Gas' is by far my favorite Firefly episode. The storyline, character backstories, the well played jokes, and the score are amazing. But for me the last minute of the episode tugs my heartstrings.
As for the reference JP is making....there are about three Firefly inspired Fan Films under production and I have been involved with one named Browncoats: Redemption. More specifically, my hubbie is playing one of the principal roles along with a talented group of actors. Also, they have a facebook group (click here). What's really neat about this project is that both Joss Whedon and Fox/Universal have given their blessing for this film because all proceeds are being donated to charities supported by the original Firefly cast.

Donating the proceeds to charity is one of the biggest reasons this film got the blessings that it did from the parties that own the rights. It's also an amazing way to honor those from the original show, not only by making the film itself but also by donating to the causes they care about.
