I put this on my list of Junkie-must-see-TV because it's innovative, just like Siggie. He put American Football in space with aliens and and a drug-running mob... Firefly puts the best in the tradition of the Western in space with 6 shot laser pistols and cargo-rustlers. There's even rumours that Serenity 2 (the sequel to the movie made by the characters in the TV show) is now in the works.

You can even watch the series in order on the DVDs. I watched to movie first, but I didn't know better. Totally check out the series first.

the beeb has been trying to save money and have said something along the lines of they're not planning on making many more new shows, and want to do more repeats. So... But itv, channel 4 and five are still making stuff. Lovely trashy tv from channel 4! (i actually like some of these teen dramas now, like skins and nearly famous, very trashy but it sucked me in.) Controversial crap from five. Beeb wannabe itv. Or the million cable and satellite channels.

I agree that most BBC programming seems way more innovative than US works. Mostly, it's because the cultural storylines are new to me. Than came Coupling (Friends but older and with funny accents and better storylines) and the Beeb no longer seemed to be tackling those things I didn't get. Firefly is the first show in a long time that took the American culture and made it interesting. Serenity was just as good, too bad Fox did'nt give the show a chance to find a bigger audience, but Fox has a history of cutting good shows too early, example Freaky Links. What kills me is Fox didn't even air all the episodes! The fact that people STILL talk about the show, love the characters, discuss it in forums should make Fox say, "What the hell were we thinking??" I do like the fact that "Kaylee" and Inara are on Stargate Atlantis now.

And stupid... they didn't give the show its due and when they walk down the other path, they just don't look back.... It may work for them, but as far as I'm concerned, they missed a golden opportunity...

they think fox IS REAL stupid

they start a series, a high quality scifi show, where they KNOW their numbers will be low, but loyal, and drop it after one or two seasons before it catches on with the general public, PLUS they don't actively support it in their advertising

It wasn't even a full first season... and they showed the shows out of order... made them screw it all up to fit their mold for the "target demographic"... it really is a tale of woe...

They weren't quite regular guns. Mal's gun seemed normal, but it made some kind of electronic noise when he cocked it. I have no idea what it was supposed to mean, but no "regular" gun does that. ;)
