English Sitcoms

What's with all the american cartoons?

Here in England, we enjoy the finer things in life.

Such as:

My Family, Love Soup, Red Dwarf, Skins

Better than american dad anyday!

Check out Black Books (I don't think it's been mentioned already). It didn't run long (2 seasons) but it's hilarious...I was hooked from the pilot.

I bought the entire series on DVD for my dad for a Christmas present and it has yet to leave my house!  Tongue out

And they had an entire booth that sold nothing but Red Dwarf crap. DVDs, statues, photos, books. It was an insane amount of Red dwarf crap.

I still use the swear, "SMEEEEEGHEEEEEED" but no one knows what I'm talking about.

There was a list of things where, when it happened, you had to drink.  Practically guaranteed you'd be plastered within five minutes of the start of any episode!

Re: English Sitcoms

It's sheer coincidence.  Just like the copy of the Red Dwarf book I bought him several years ago that has been sitting on my bookshelf, well, the past several years!

Re: English Sitcoms

This may be obvious, but I love the original Office, Ricky's David Brent is the ultimate douche. I could never get into the one here in the States. Also ,I've heard that the show Father Ted is great. I haven't seen it yet. I've been meaning to. Any opinions?

Re: English Sitcoms

You guys really need to check this sit-com out, Vyvyan Bastard played by Adrian Edmondson was the greatest characters from 80’s TV with the best put downs like “bogie bum” or “bum bag” and he kicked the shit out of all the other characters.

Re: English Sitcoms

It was one of my all-time favourite shows as a kid (and still is - I bought the DVDs a while back and got my own kids hooked).

BUT...my middle name is Vivienne, so I got teased MERCILESSLY at school! Every time The Young Ones screened on TV, kids would re-enact entire episodes at me (yes, AT me), yelling "Vyvyannnnnnn" in Neil's voice and trying to get me to smash walls and doors with my head, just for laughs. Pretty funny the first time. After an entire series, not so much. I still cringe when I hear it, twenty years later!

Love many of them: Blackadder, Monty Python (of course), Mr. Bean, Benny Hill (I'm old school), Are You Being Served? (so-so), Fawlty Towers, Absolutely Fabulous (love Joanna Lumley), The Young Ones, and Spaced (Simon Pegg... yeah!)

Blackadder: "A man may fight for many things. His country, his friends, his principles, the glistening ear on the cheek of a golden child. But personally, I'd mud-wrestle my own mother for a ton of cash, an amusing clock and a sack of French porn."
