Favorite Horror and/or Science Fiction Movie Soundtrack
Just curious to find out what everyones' favorite horror/science fiction movie soundtracks are (especially if anyone can suggest a particularly good one that the rest of us can check out). As for me, I'd have to say my more recent favorites have been the first two Saw soundtracks (haven't heard the third).

For my money, the ALIENS soundtrack is unbeatable. Der Glockenshpeil used for that thing is so unsettling, and add to that the rythm section comprised of lead pipes, and you've got an audio horror masterpiece.

I listen to a little bit of everything but to get the blood pumping, it's usually Metal/Industrial. For a good Creepy Metal I find you can't much beat a sadly now defunct band Originally from Toledo Ohio, Lollipop Lust Kill. If you listen to their lyrics you might think they were written by Sigler himself. As for actual movie sound tracks I will have to go with one of the movie soundtrack masters--Danny Elfman in particular the sound track for Clive Barker's Nightbreedhttp://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000008IYL/imdb-button/ Vampires versus Werewolves in a browser based game

Fans of the Lacuna Coil music used in the intro and outro for The Rookie should check out Inkubus Sukkubus. They've got a similar sound and some seriously rocking songs. -- The ways of the Lord are often dark but never pleasant.

Don't laugh, but I really dig the Silent Hill 3 soundtrack by Akira Ymaoka. It's upbeat, it's creepy, it's just all around enjoyable. oh, and the Halloween soundtrack by John Carpenter. There's just something about Mike Myers that would scare an ancestor out of its spotted skin. Groooooovy, baby! --kevin

I agree with the Nightfall and the LotR soundtracks. The music is powerful and really works... Depending on what you are after lyrics wise though: Dimmu Borgir, stay away from their songs in English though, Shagrath's voice just doesn't work as well in English as in Norwegian (at least I feel that way). Other songs that works for me are Metallica - S&M album, Rammstein - Live aus Berlin and Volkerball (you can't beat German lyrics and pyros) and Prodigy.

I am a huge fan of the Greg Edmonson's work for Firefly. He nailed the combination of cultures and the western feel IMHO. I was really disappointed that he was not brought on board for the Serenity movie. ------------ KnitWitch http://www.knitwitchzone.com

I would definitely have to agree. I mean, any video game that can cause nightmares in grown men (and women for that matter) is worth a big nod.

I'll agree with you. I never paid attention to composers, but Greg Edmonson is completely awesome. He's composing music for a video game and I heard a bit of it, and it still has a firefly edge to it, with the whole mixing of cultures. I enjoy recieving private messages. it makes it so much more fun.

One modern composer that has had a profound effect on me is John Williams - hands down. Most folks know about his work from Star Wars, but he's done tons more since way back in the '50's when he was a youngun known as "Johnny Williams". When I first started studying music composition as an undergrad, I was stunned to realize how many tv & movie moments in my life this man has made - an continues to make - absolutely magical with his music: (believe it or not, this list isn't complete) General Electric Theatre (1953) a tv anthology series Gilligan's Island (1964) Lost In Space theme (1965) The Time Tunnel (1966) Valley of the Dolls (1967) Heidi (1968) Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1969) The Poseidon Adventure (1972) The Long Goodbye (1973) Earthquake (1974) The Towering Inferno (1974) Jaws (1975), Jaws 2 (1978) Close Encounters of The Third Kind (1977) Star Wars (1977), Empire Strikes Back (1980), Return of the Jedi (1983), Phantom Menace (1999), Attack of the Clones (2002), Revenge Of The Sith (2005) The Fury (1978) Superman (1978), Superman II (1980) Superman III (1983), Superman IV (1987), Superman Returns (2006) 1941 (1979) Dracula (1979) Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Temple of Doom (1984), Last Crusade (1989), The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) E.T. (1982) The Big Chill (1983) The River (1984) Amazing Stories (1984) tv series theme + 2 episode scores SpaceCamp (1986) Empire of the Sun (1987) Witches of Eastwick (1987) The Accidental Tourist (1988) Always (1989) Born On The Fourth of July (1989) Home Alone (1990), Home Alone 2 (1992) Presumed Innocent (1990) Stanley & Iris (1990) Hook (1991) JFK (1991) Far and Away (1992) Jurassic Park (1993), Lost World (1997), Jurasic Park III (2001) Schindler's List (1993) Sleepers (1996) Amistad (1997) Rosewood (1997) Seven Years In Tibet (1997) Saving Private Ryan (1998) Stepmom (1998) The Patriot (2000) A.I. (2001) Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone (2001), Chamber of Secrets (2002), Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), Order of the Phoenix (2006) Catch Me If You Can (2002) Minority Report (2002) The Terminal (2004) Memoirs Of A Geisha (2005) Munich (2005) War Of The Worlds (2005) I love ol' Johnny Williams' - he's my soundtrack idol... "Duel of the Fates" from Star Wars: Phantom Menace is the leading favorite right now. ------------ KnitWitch http://www.knitwitchzone.com

Elmer Bernstein was always a favorite, as was Jerry Goldsmith. Pure pure minimalist creep-out mood music, John Carpenter & Alan Howarth make some great movie music. And let us not forget Danny Elfman! (especially the main titles for Nightbreed - gooseflesh galore!)

Not really horror and it's probably more philosophical then science fiction, but one of my favorites is definately the soundtrack for The Fountain, by Clint Mansell.

Re: Favorite Horror and/or Science Fiction Movie Soundtrack

The Silent Hill 3 soundtrack is mighty fine indeed. I still find myself listening to it fairly regularly.

I also quite like Godspeed You! Black Emperor's contribution to the score for 28 Days Later. It's the instrumental named "East Hastings," which is a good 18 minutes long, with four movements. They used the "Sad Mafioso" movement in the film, and it was left off the soundtrack CD, which is a shame.
