A) They have six legs, not eight. Use almost any insect instead. Rockroach? B) Reminds me of Rock Lobster. Peppy '80s hit does exactly jive with this tale.

Try something in Greek/Latin: Terras',Terrats', Gaias', Gaians'. There from a far away fictional place. They can be called anything except Fluffy Pacifists. Maybe start with what kind of planet, asteroid, gas giant, or moon they originated from. What kind of solar system? How many stars? Were they from the Milky Way galaxy or Andromeda, the closed galaxy to ours'. How old was the planet/planets? How many planets in there home system? Did they evolve or were they created? Were they the only sentient race from their home world? The more IQ's in an area, the faster they evolve or kill each other off.

Rocktopi is definately a great name! I think the only name that could replace it would have to be "Rocktopussy" because that would just be hilarious.

Well since this topic is geeking its way into the deeper realms of the siglerverse. Technically all that planetary stuff wouldnt matter as far as them being called rocktopi (which when I saw it i thought it was pronounced Rock -"Toe-pee" and that it was gonna be some lost human civilization). Because from the perspective of the characters that is what they can best be described as. And, at least in Earthcore (especially at the point when they are "named") we dont know anything about their planet of origin or their "real" racial name. Maybe in Mt Fitzroy??? Please, let's not forget that rocktopi is the PLURAL form. The singular would be rocktopus. A) Six, not eight? No problem. Ever since that K went in there, the "octo" idea was kaputski. B) You mean you can't envision the beasties boiling out of the ground, laying waste to the campsite, and slaughtering personnel right and left, all with the B-52s musically cavorting in the background?

I mean it gives you an awesome mental image to connect with the creatures. Correct me if I'm wrong, but rocktopi isn't the name of the species but just what they were called by the humans in the book and Sigler as narrator. So, it's more of an imagery technique, right?

I like the name, it created great imagery for me when listening to and reading the story. I think they'll always be rocktopi for me even if a more formal name emerges in the course of the story. There so cute! - NOT!!! ------------ KnitWitch

The music would make it creepier. It might make the experience more alien, no pun intended. That's if it was made into a video or animation.

I would agree about the names. As for their appearance, its not horrifying to someone like me. But the smell of the creatures, that would be hell.

I just finished the podiocast of EarthCore and I think Rocktopi makes them sound kind of cute and not like the mad killing monsters that they are.
