Rockhead turned into a crackhead
I found this non-literature story last summer while cruising Itunes for sci-fi crap. Damn was I surprised to find a hard science fiction novel with honest to goodness economic and exploration geology as part of the main themes before everyone dies. I work in this field and this story was a nice treat. It kept me sane on a few long drives back to the U.P. Great work sigler.

We could definitely sell it to geologists as a story of economic and exploration geology in which everyone dies in the end. -- The ways of the Lord are often dark but never pleasant.

I happen to work in an exploration camp, I listened to Earthcore while logging core. I would say that some Geologist and engineers would laugh at some elements of it, but those that are sci fi fans like my self would get it to it. There is a shortage of geolical literature out there. You have one rockhead turned crackhead right here.

We could use it as an environmental anti-mining morality tale? Dig... Re: Rockhead turned into a crackhead
Yeah, I'd say EARTHCORE has about as much in common with real geology and engineering as CSI:Miami has with real crime scene investigative work. Still, I put it above the majority of books I've read that involve mining and geology - I talked to several precious metals miners, the geothermal activity is sound, and most of the tech was quite accurate when I wrote it. There is clearly scifi license in there, with Angus's innovative drill. But you just wait, mister - someday someone will invent a drill bit just like that, then I will have the last laugh.

I'm sensing that you need to hire a draftsman to help you work out the patentable items in your book... Yeah, I would love to have a Kool suit! Or even better, a Kool-Aid suit! It could quench your thirst AND let you mine in extremely hot temperatures.

Re: Rockhead turned into a crackhead
A Kool-Aid suit would be like the stillsuits in Dune, except they would add a flavoring powder and sugar to the water taken from your wastes so you can sip a tasty (albeit warm) beverage while you mine. Speaking of Kool-Aid and suits, I think it's a travesty that they've forced a pair of shorts onto the Kool-Aid Man. -- The ways of the Lord are often dark but never pleasant.

That's me and now I'm a junkie. All hail the FDOL!! These geologic concepts aren't difficult and it was clear that Scott did some research. Besides, the action kicked ass. There isn't a damn thing wrong with "Lots and LLLOOOTTTSSS of violence." I thoroughly enjoyed Rollins' Subterranean, and it wasn't nearly as geologically accurate as Earthcore.

-but i was embressed with his science here too.
as a matter of fact, his science in all his books is good. he does good research and tends to stay true to the science in his story development. as with all scifi authors, some fudging or expansion of science fact occurs for the good of the story. but sigler tend to bend things and still remain in the realm of the plausible
