The WahWah mountains are actually a real place in Beaver County, Utah.  The region is home to hundreds of defunct mining tunnels some so old and precarious that they are too dangerous for even the most experience miners.

This Google map shows the region of the Wah Wah mountains where EarthCore takes place. Check out the satellite view as well ... it gives a good picture of how the region looks as if you were flying over it. Sadly no street view

I too just got back to listening to the podio version of the book. It just so happens that I live in a city mentioned in the book and within an hour to the actual Wah Wah Mountains. The book inspired me to give them a visit today. Gmork is entirely right. The area is filled with abandoned mines. There is plenty of solitude. The area is a good drive from anywhere. The range doesn't stand out much as a place to visit. The highway that divides the Northern and Southern ranges is pretty lonely. It is also home to the rare mineral red beryl, sorry no platinum. Due to poor route choices I didn't make it to the summit of the Southern Wah Wah range. I plan on going back on Sunday. Anything you guys want me to photograph when I go? Also, The highpoint of the southern range is unnamed. I think we should dub it Funeral Peak.

Does anyone know if Scott Sigler has been to the Wah Wah's? I really wondered about that when I went. The mining history, the actual difficulty of finding information on google and how much the range doesn't stand out in that part of Utah all made me think that he had. If nothing else, a tribute to the research he puts into his book.

About visiting the WahWah's?  I bookmarked it because it was so cool! Would love to do a walkabout in the Wah Wah's... if for nothing else, just to get the feel of what Sonny McGuiness felt :)

In awaiting the FDO's next release (The ALLPRO) I listened again to the audio of Earthcore.. Brought back good memories. Such a great story! The inbred roctopi are awaiting us all in Mt. Fitzroy, hopefully soon to come!

But does anyone else think EarthCore would make an awesome game?  I am thinking along the lines of the Twilight creations zombie tile games.  Players would build the playing area with tiles that form tunnels and roctopi and silver spiders are placed randomly.  I am not sure (other than just last man standing) what the overall goal would be but thought it sounded like a fun concept.
