I seem to recall something in one of the bits describing how the seeds work that they would not develop unless they landed on a human. There was some explanation about them needing a human-level of intelligence for the triangles to properly grow.
Based on the creatures seen on the other side of the portal at the end of Infected, yeah they are at least associated with the Ki. I get the feeling that all of Scott's stories take place in the same universe. There are little crossovers all through the books. For example, the Taxidermist in Nocturnal has a stuffed Ancestor in his shop. Also, one of the "weekly roundup" bits in The Rookie is "sponspred" by a drink company pushing a new flavor "Roctopi Red", clearly an homage to Earthcore.

That was SO an Ancestor in the taxidermist's shop!! I'm almost finished Nocturnal so don't ruin it. Didn't even think of a rocktopi crossover... That would be magnificent. Or an Ancestor one... Scariest thing ever. Marie's Triangle Children... Imagine a Triangle Firstborn!

There are all kinds of little crossovers in Scott's work, kind like easter eggs. I've even noticed crossovers to stories by other authors. For example, did you notice that the President's name in Infected is Hutchins... as in "J.C."
JC's 7th Son trilogy also has several really blatant crossovers to Infected, mentioning specific character names and events.

His stories are highly entertaining. Of course I've read all fo the Hornblower series, and there are many parallels there, but regardless of that the stories are excellent. I've got my dad hooked on them actually. Start with Quarter Share and work your way up.
