When tragedy brings together old friends

The Boys 2014The father of one of my lifelong friend recently passed away. On 48 hours notice, I jumped on a plane from San Diego to Detroit, then drove four hours from Detroit to Cheboygan, MI, for the funeral. Several of my friends did the same: drop everything, one of our own has lost a parent. Not all of us made it — life gets in the way — but enough of us did for me to stop and think about how amazing it is that our friendships have lasted our entire lives.

I live a rather fortunate existence. Hard work has made me what I am, don’t get me wrong, but there’s been more than a fair share of circumstances beyond my control that have given me a leg up in the world. Along with parents who are like something out of an 80s Disney flick, a business partner that solves more problems than Winston Wolfe, and …

The Lost FRIENDS episodes

Friends and stuff

This year is the 20th anniversary of the first season of FRIENDS. Yes-yes, I know, you hate that show, you find it insipid and dumb — and yet you’ve watched several dozen episodes, and felt bad about yourself for laughing along with them. I loved the show. I couldn’t stand David Schwimmer’s role, but hey, five out […]

Book review: GOLDEN SON

Book II of Pierce Brown's RED RISING trilogy

GOLDEN SON by Pierce BrownLet’s just get this out of the way: My name is Scott, and I am a fanboy. I love this series.

As a novelist, I realize I’m supposed to keep some level of analytical distance in order to critique to structure, form, plot, pacing, character development, etc., but for the RED RISING series, my button-pushing brain simply shuts off about five pages in — much as it does with the GAME OF THRONES series. Like an amoeba surrounding a hapless paramecium, Pierce Brown’s debut series simply engulfs me.

The single best thing I can say about GOLDEN SON and the series is this: I wish I could live in this world. Which is weird, considering …

If you’ve never seen the original, I highly recommend it. Based on the 1967 novel by Ira Levin, ROSEMARY’S BABY tells the tale of a struggling young couple that move into a hoity-toity Manhattan apartment building. Continue Reading →

New story out today:
“The Sixth Day of Deer Camp”

Volume II of THE APOCALYPSE TRIPTYCH

Apocalypse Triptych by Hugh Howe, John Joseph Adams and Scott Sigler

My latest story is out, “The Sixth Day of Deer Camp.” It is part of THE END IS HERE anthology, Book II of the “Apocalypse Tryptic.”

This story is the sequel to “The Fifth Day of Deer Camp” (see what I did there?) which was in the first volume of this trilogy, THE END IS NIGH. You want Yoopers up against the apocalypse? Brothers and sisters, I provide, eh?

Get it in:
Paperback
Kindle

Will it be podcast?
No, because the anthology isn’t “mine.” John Joseph Adams and Hugh Howey put this series together.

Will there be an audiobook?
Yes, but I don’t know when it will be out. I recorded the audio for my story, so you can continue to revel in my Yooper accents.

Scott as King Joffrey from Game of Thrones

Speed painting from artist Len Peralta

If you’ve never seen “speed painting” videos before, they are a hallmark of the new era of digital art and social media. Here’s one from the “Geek-A-Week” feature where artist Len Peralta made me King Joffrey Baratheon (the best character ever in GAME OF THRONES. Three minutes to see how a piece of art comes […]
