NOCTURNAL cover"They mostly come out at night ... mostly ... "

NOCTURNAL is the upcoming horror/thriller from New York Times best-selling novelist Scott Sigler. It hits you in your face on April 3, 2012. Pre-order now:

Order hardcover or Kindle eBook from Amazon.com for Scott Sigler's new horror/thriller NOCTURNALBN.com presents New York Times best-seller bestselling author Scott Sigler's new horror/thriller NOCTURNAL in hardcover and for Nook eBook reader

Pre-order autographed copies from Borderlands Books

NOCTURNAL is an epic story of mayhem set in the heart of San Francisco, where a group of people live in the city's unknown, underground ruins. They come out at night to prey on the "won't-bees," the dregs of society that won't be missed.

They've existed for hundreds of years, but are about to run headlong into Homicide detectives Bryan Clauser and Pookie Chang. It's a fight for existence as the police fight to stop a string of brutal, ritualistic occult murders.

NOCTURNAL is simultaneously a horror/thriller, a high-action comic book of a novel, and a throwback to classic 80s buddy-cop movies. If you're a child of the 80s, you'll love this one.

I was honored to be a guest on "Triangulation," a show hosted by TWiT superstars Leo Laporte and Tom Merrit. This is an hour-long interview covering lots of awesomosity. Leo and Tom ask me about the state of publishing, why my fan base is so important, and why I continue to give away content for free. Also? Feast your eyes on the Stache of Døøm™ in full video glory!

It's Veteran's Day here in the US, and we here at Dark Øverlord Media wanted to pass along our sincere thanks to the folks who serve and the people who love them.
We created this video last year, and since then have gained a lot of Junkies, many who are service men and women.  When we thought about how we'd say thank you this year, we kept coming back to the heartfelt messages in this video.  So although it's "old news" now, the message is evergreen.

Dark Øverlord Media's chosen charities are the Wounded Warrior's Project and Disabled American Veterans, which we proudly support, today and always.

Today, on Veteran's Day, we once again say thank you.

Bankers, the house always winsFinally, an Occupy Wall Street action with clear goals that makes perfect sense to me. "Bank Transfer Day" is Saturday. People are planning to transfer their money from big, national banks to local credit unions. Great info in this linked story.

This is the fundamental way consumers influence the market -- if you are unhappy with a company, take your business elsewhere. Don't like Netflix's new fees? Cancel your account. Don't like Facebook's privacy policy? Don't use it. Don't like runaway bank fees or the way banks do business? Put your money into another institution.

All the yelling, screaming, sky-is-falling protesting and, yes, even drumming (sorry, you world-changing Drum Circlers) won't have anywhere near the impact of consumers taking their business elsewhere. This isn't blocking a port and stopping hard-working people from getting to their jobs. This isn't a general strike that doesn't impact a specific industry or company. This isn't some millionaire actor making a photo op by protesting the same banking system that pays him to shill their credit cards. This is the free market at work -- vote with your wallet.

Yes, of course, there is often more to it than just not patronizing a company, but the main thing every company needs is customers. Lose enough customers, you lose revenue. Lose enough revenue, and companies make changes to get new customers.

Science Ink by Carl ZimmerWe've got another author interview for this week's FridayFix™

Scott interviews Carl Zimmer about his awesome new book SCIENCE INK.  Carl writes The Loom, and has a huge gallery of science tattoos on his site.  He's just released a big, beautiful, full-color coffee table book of said science tattoo art.

Scott counts Carl Zimmer as one of his big influencers, citing Carl's book PARASITE REX as an inspiration for INFECTED. So it's quite cool to note that Scott's empty set tattoo is featured in SCIENCE INK.

Back with another GuestGoods, this time with artist, friend of DØM, and all-around good guy Len Peralta. Don't know his work?  Oh, you will shortly.  And you can even grab some for yourself, just like us!  (Check us out as Villian vs. Hero below!)

What is GuestGoods?
There are a ton of creative innovators out there, and we think it's cool to share things that Junkies might dig. We're approaching it from the "If you like Scott's stuff, you might like this" perspective. We keep this show short! It's a three-question interview show, and the questions are the same for everyone.

Questions are simple: 1) What's your hot new thing? 2) What's in it for the Junkies?  3) Where can they find out more?

From Len himself:
Thanks to Scott and A for giving me this platform to hawk my wares and basically pimp myself out. I never miss a chance.

A colleague of mine recently compared my approach to art  to a “gunslinger”.  I found that funny, beca
use I have never heard that term in relation to a cartoonist before.  As we chatted more, I got a better understanding of what he meant. He meant to say that I just run out there and take chances with my art. I don’t know if a project will end up working o r not, but in the end, it’s worth taking a chance rather than not doing the project at all.

This is especially true of my current art project “50 vs. 50”.  As with Monster By Mail (my other original art project), I created it with a specific goal in mind – to get myself to San Diego Comic Con. (Monster By Mail was created to hel
[img_assist|nid=5917|title=|desc=|link=none|align=right|width=195|height=250]p pay for heath care costs for the birth of my baby daughter). In the end, I drew 50 villains and 50 heroes and was able to make it to San Diego for the festivities.

Now, in time for Halloween, I’m drawing 50 zombies and 50 apocalyptic survivors for people. There isn’t any specific goal in mind this time around. It’s really just a fun way to celebrate one of my favorite holidays.  Folks can order a digital version of the art, or for a few extra dollars, they can get a signed print or even the original pen and ink artwork of their zombie or survivor. All in all, it adheres to my tenant of making commissionable original art for people affordable and cool.

You can check out my heroes and villains gallery at http://www.the50vs50.com.  And you can be the first   zombie that shambles into the Zombie Gallery. (As of this writing, I haven’t drawn any zombies for this project, so the f ield is open.)  You can also check out all my other projects (like my wildly popular nerdy trading card project “Geek A Week” and my avatar creation site Flipface) at my main website http://www.lenperalta.com.

Bioengineering to Generate Healthy Skin
SKin on miceScienceDaily (Oct. 17, 2011) — Scientists at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M -- Carlos III University) are participating in research to study how to make use of the potential for auto regeneration of stem skills from skin, in order to create, in the laboratory, a patient's entire cutaneous surface by means of a combination of biological engineering and tissue engineering techniques.

Skin is a tissue that naturally renews itself throughout our lives thanks to the existence of epidermic stem cells. "We have found that this regenerative potential can be preserved in vitro (in the laboratory) if the cells are joined and become part of generated skin using tissue bioengineering techniques," explains Marcela del Río, of UC3M's Bioengineering. The research group in which she participates, made up of scientists from the UC3M, from CIEMAT (the Center for Energy, Environmental and Technological Research) and CIBERER (the Center for Biomedical Research in the Rare Disease Network) of the Carlos III Health Institute, has been working with this type of adult stem cells for years, with the objective of using them to regenerate patients' skin.

imageUPDATE 10/14/11: Junkies, what started out as a single copy of EARTHCORE pitched in for a good cause has grown to a serious heapin' helpin' of prizes. This is all to benefit Emma Hoolin, a very sick little girl who is a member of Wolfie's family (that's Coach Roark of Wabash Wolfpack fame). Emma's family is trying to raise money to send her to America for treatment. You can see the details of Emma's condition at the donation link below. Donation deadline is November 2, 2012.

1. Use the link to Guestford Junkie's team page (http://www.justgiving.com/AllforEmmaHoolin) to donate. Only donations through her team will count.

2. Be sure to put your Junkie name in the notes with your donation. That will help The Harveys (the family running this auction) determine who wins.

Look at this updated list of prizes. Some fantastic authors (and fantastic people) have pitched in some goodies, enough to make three prize packages.

The highest donor will receive the Grand Prize, the second highest donor will get to chose between Runner up prize #1 and Runner up prize #2. The third highest donor will receive the remaining prize package. If we happen to have any ties, we will give the prizes in the order that the donations were received. These are all great prizes for a really good cause. Lets give Emma all the Junkie love we can.

And one more snippet from SigerFest for now. This is one more short story Scott wrote in his senior year of high school, and published in the Young Author's Showcase. You've heard all about Scott's travails on the football field in high school, right?  I promise you haven't heard much about this. This one? It has rapping. And wizards.

Again, I'd recommend SiglerFest 2012 if you can make it.  It's going to be a grand ol' time fore sure. In the meantime, take a listen to what you missed out on back in May!

AUTHOR'S NOTE: Scott here, adding in a note. This might be the most-embarassing story I have ever created. I wrote this as a senior in high school, when Run DMC, Beastie Boys, NWA, Salt-n-Peppa and Kid-N-Play were ripping off faces all over the world. I'd read some of the SPELLSINGER series by Alan Dean Foster, and felt that hip-hop would be "bitchin' " (I belive that was the word I used at the time) as a poetic form of spell-casting. I'm sure I thought this was fantastic when I wrote it. Enjoy a laugh at my expense

This week we've got another sweet little snippet from SigerFest.  This is a short story Scott wrote in his senior year of high school, published in the Young Author's Showcase, a literary magazine he co-edited at his high school.  Yes, you read all of that right. (And you don't want to miss it, I assure you.)

If you dig this, you should seriously consider making it to SiglerFest 2012.  We'll have details for where and exactly when soon (yes, I swear, soooooon) but we're looking at this time next year.

Scott and I are off to the Southern California Writers Conference today, and I've decided to let Seth Harwood mind the FridayFix™ while I'm gone.  His new book intrigues me because it's him reading, but the first-person narrative voice is a woman.  Oh, and also because it's a rockin' new crime story from Harwood, and it's now live, for free, on Podiobooks.com, and I dig it. I know we featured him on the GuestGoods yesterday, but I'm doubling down. We'll be back on Sunday, but for now … here's Seth:

IN BROAD DAYLIGHT by Seth HarwoodAwwww... yeah! It's yer boy™ here to take over the FridayFix. Seth Harwood comin' at ya in your ear-piece! Lock down those minivans!
Yesterday I was here to talk with Scott and give you all the Guest Goods, and now I'm back with a special Junkie Edition of Episode 1 from In Broad Daylight! Check it out here, and then when you're ready, I'll have episodes two through four waiting for you over at sethharwood.com.

Scott and I go way back, and if you're an OJ or you've been around, you've heard my voice before and are no stranger to the Jack Palms Crime or CrimeWAV. Well, In Broad Daylight is the new hotness, featuring a new character for me, FBI Agent Jess Harding. She's bad, badass, and isn't about to take any prisoners as she tracks a serial killer across Alaska! Listen up, enjoy, and come find me when you're ready for more.

I'm also currently running a Kickstarter campaign to pre-sell special edition copies of my second Jack Palms novel THIS IS LIFE right here. This is your chance to get your name into the acknowledgements, score some wicked badass swag, and show your support for free podcast fiction in the atmosphere! If you picked up a copy of Jack Wakes Up or Young Junius in the past, you know this one's gonna be more of The Awesome.

Awwww snap! Check out our brand-new show, GuestGoods. We're gearing up complete website revision, which we plan to launch before 2012 hits, and we thought it was high time to dish out some of the changes a little early (You see that freshy fresh icon over there?  A little taste of things to come. Oh, yeah, you know you can't wait.)

Seth HarwoodIn this episode: We launch the three-question assualt at fellow Junkie Seth HarwoodSeth's been quite busy over at sethharwood.com, dropping a brand-new podcast called IN BROAD DAYLIGHT, which he'll tell you all about. He's also running a Kickstarter campaign to produce killer crime-fiction eBooks. Seth is a hard-workin' mo-fo, so give him a couple of minutes and -- of course -- let us know what you think about this show and this format!

Oregon uniformsThere are several new uniforms in college football that are just flat-out awesome. We're talking a major break from traditional approaches. Maryland (in the video above), Georgia, Boise State, Arizona, and, of course, Oregon, have some flashy looks.

Could it be that the wild uniforms of the GFL are inspiring designers at Nike and UnderArmour?

Case in point: here is the description of the Grontak Hydras uniforms, taken from THE ROOKIE (podcast in 2007):
"The Hydras were 0-1, but drastically better than the Woo Wallcrawlers. The Hydras wore white jerseys with bright red numbers and yellow trim. The jerseys looked normal, but their leg armor was painted a bizarre red-and-yellow checkerboard pattern."

Check out this slideshow from the New York Times that shows new uniforms of nine teams. And, here's a related article from the Times that talks about this trend.

When I wrote about the uniforms of the GFL, I thought far-future teams would stray from the boring, predictable styles we've had for decades. I didn't know the change would come this fast, however, and I am enjoying it.
