THE STARTER: Tier One Team Logo Contest!

What is the logo for the To Pirates? For the Hittoni Hullwalkers? How about the Jupiter Jacks? Well, Junkie, those logos are now up to you (or someone artsy that you know). That's right, Dark Øverlord Media is launching "THE STARTER Team Logo Contest." We are offering $50 to each of 18 winning logos created for the Tier One GFL teams. Click here to get full contest details.
You can enter as many logos as you like, even multiple logos for the same team. Say three of your logos are chosen, you win $150. Say you get all eighteen? Then you get $900.
More important than the money is that these logos will be used for the remainder of The Galactic Football League series, which is six more books (including THE STARTER).
You do not have to be a Junkie to enter. Yes, you can go get your brother-in-law to be a ringer. I'm a freakin' mercenary here, I don't care who does the logos as long as they get done, and get done good (I've been hanging around the FDO™ for too long, as you can tell by my English).

Me! I think I will be able to do this no problem, but I first have to design. I'm salivating.
P.S. - use Illustrator for this, the lines will be cleaner.

Does anyone have any tips about programs to use?
Preferably something cheap (free) that an idiot can use?? Or any tips in general about how to approach something like this? I have never used a computer to draw/ design something. Any tips are welcome.

The best program for this stuff is Adobe Illustrator, but that's expensive. See if a friend has access to it. Who knows, your library may have a computer with the Adobe Creative suite on it.

Art programs
Electronic art comes in basically two flavours: raster and vactor. Raster graphics use coloured pixels to display the art, vector graphics use math to draw lines. The industry standards for these types are Adobe Photoshop for raster, and Adobe Illustrator for vector (wayt o go Adobe). However these programs are super pricey.
A free alternative to Photoshop is GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/), available for Mac, Windows and Linux. It is nearly as powerful as Photoshop... and free.
Logos are particularly suited to vactor format, as they need to be scalable (and they thend to use solid lines and colours). Inkscape (see my comment here) is a free vector program that (again) is nearly as good as illustrator.

I've tried to use GIMP with little success.
It has a very steep learning curve. At least it seems so to me. I've never played with Photoshop because it's always been too pricey for me.

I'd go with paint if you're any good with it
I was probably going to use colored pencils myself. Keep it simple, make the pixel count high and then shrink the image and it should work fine. At this point, I'm not sure I'm going to have the time though.
