Scott, you know this brother loves him some FDO, so I say this with all love. Why, oh why does your mobile app not have an in app purchase feature? A junkie like me could put some serious pain on the buy now button in your app. Perhaps you'd bless us with one for your next book pre-order event?

The All-Pro possibly being pre-order /only/ -- idea/suggestion
Scott, you talked about the fact that POD was simply not up to the task of creating hardcovers of the sort of quality you've produced for the other books in this series and about how the price would have to be crazily high and thus you might go pre-order /only/ for this book.
How about pre-order only for the *hardcover* but then a POD paperback for those who want it after the pre-orders are done? Obviously ebooks are easy, but POD's relatively easy too in theory at least. It doesn't have to be as awesome as the hardcover and it can be whatever price you like (figure in the same margin as on the ebook or something?) but it would provide people (not us since we've all bought copies, right? =) an option if they want to hold something in their hands/display something on their bookshelf and can't get the hardcover.

I think that is a good idea but I think the real crux of the problem is not the cost but having to pay to store the inventory that is not sold, and take time away from writing/creating content to go to the storage and mail books whenever new orders are placed and that the exuberant price for the books comes in with the print to order technology.
I thought about recommending my basement as storage to the FDO for free but that would require moving the inventory several states, trusting a stranger to take care of and ship his merchandise and most likely I would just end up rolling around in all the books like they were a giant pile of my money!

Thanks for thinking of offering up the basement for storage, but the real killer is the time spent packing and shipping books. We're not to the point where we can outsource fulfilment, and even if we could, we would need to find a company that will work with our individually numbered books. It's not just taking one off a shelf, it's making sure it has the number -- in the order of which books were purchased -- unique to the customer. That is the time-killer, and that is what makes ARealGirl the made-of-win machine that she is.
So even if we could find less expensive storage, we're still doing the fulfilment ourselves.
However, your basement sounds ideal for storage of other things. Like bodies. We'll be in touch.
That's a thought
We're considering that. As we'll soon be out of ROOKIEs, there will be no option for people that don't do eReading. After ARealGirl and I finish these next two deadlines, we may explore POD paperbacks. Some of our contemporaries are doing that now, but we haven't checked on success rates or revenue.
The fact that you willing
The fact that you willing to learn what you need to put the content out for us is really kick ass. I just didn't know if it was your end or mine. Hell I was listening to Earthcore the other day and just noticed that the quality of the audio isn't what you put out today. While the inital quality may not be up to snuff we know that you will get the hang of it and put out better quality stuff down the road. :)
