THE ALL-PRO pre-order Yes, it's almost here. The third book in the GFL series, THE ALL-PRO, kicks off the pre-order frenzy on April 1, 2011, 9am Pacific, noon Eastern, 5pm GMT.

Listen up, Junkies: free eBook if you buy the hardcover. You heard me. Don't make me stop this car. We realize the publishing world is changing, and many of you love your Kindles and Nooks. We also know there's nothing like that shelf of hardcovers, of getting THE ALL-PRO lined up all pretty next to your other preciouses. So, best of both worlds -- pre-order the hardcover, and the day we publish (Sept. 6) you get the free eBook.

The Director of Døøm and I are pretty f-ing excited about this book. The third volume in the series somehow makes it more real, like we're going for all the marbles with a Galaxy-spanning adventure that could be a decade in the making. Y'all are here with us, every step of the way, every snap, every tackle, every pass.

Like the last two books, THE ALL-PRO is a limited-edition, signed and numbered hardcover novel wtih a sixteen-page color insert. The sooner your order gets in, the lower your number. It retails for $34.95.

With THE ROOKIE, we had such an unexpected rush that we crashed the server. Last year for THE STARTER, we switched servers, ramped up the process, and y'all hit it so hard we crashed it again (I was in Australia with the SwanCon gang at the time, which was kick-ass).

This year, we're working with the BackMyBook.com crew to handle the insane day-one demand, and they've taken it as a personal challenge to prevent crashing. (They keep talking about the gigantic servers they've got lined up for this one. Gigantic, I say.) As usual, Pulsar, our master programming ninja, will be on hand to help as well (and thank Jeebus for that).

We expect to sell around 1,000 books right off the bat, so buy early, buy often!

HOW BIG IS THE PRINT RUN?
That's the million-dollar question. As eBooks take over, A and I are considering printing enough copies of THE ALL-PRO to cover pre-orders, and that's it. We haven't made this decision yet, but keep it in mind -- if you want to wait until October to order your hardcover, you might be out of luck.

I think there *might* not be a server crash this time

Not to jinx it or anything, but there *might* not be a server crash this time.

-- BackMyBooks has already had their trial by fire (i.e. molten, slaggy servers) from when the audiobook for TheStarter came out. Now the thing about that was it required the server to perform two sort of load-intsenive events per user. The 1st was the whole sign-up/login process and the 2nd was the actual file download.

Now, of those two things, the 2nd (download) is *far* more server intensive than the 1st (sign-up/login). So I figure since BackMyBooks eventually got their site back up and beefed up a bit to handle download, they *might* be able to actually handle a pre-order ok. Because there's sign-up/login then payment. But payment is probably already partially outsorced because that's almost the only way to do it these days.

So anyway, yeah. Even with demand for sigler among junkies staying high and with all the numbers going up not down, I anticipate the server might not crash.

We shall see. :-)

Thanks for the info. Just wanted to follow up and let you know i am not completely blowing off your recommendation. I'll definitely give it another shot.

I also just purchased Ex-Heroes, based on your review of it a while back. Sounds like a neat combination.

So no athanas-bot? Huh. Well, the intertubes are any BotPoser's best tool. Take it from a BotPoser.

Interesting. I hadn't realized the implications of BmB doing the pre-order. So I guess that means we aren't hitting the scottsigler.com website when we place this order? Not sure how that all is going to work.

I also wonder if the discount codes will still work if BmB is handling the back-end.

No it really is 4pm GMT- Greenwich Mean Time NEVER changes- BST changes- so 4pm is correct. 5pm is what we'll use for BST and 6pm for Central Europe...

Challenge - naw

This time I can actually order online (I think) though I have to do things in a specific order. First, set up the order to get the correct amount, then call my bank and have a transfer of that amount done to a specific card, then finish the order. (Probably do an Amazon order at the same time to double the value of the transfer).

Last year, I had to get my wife to order it for me. I was a little nervous, but she came threw for me(we won't say anything about the follow-up email I sent A Kovacs to make sure it got done lol)

But I'm off this year, so I'll be sitting at my computer with a green tea and credit card in hand!
