Physiology is a weak spot for me
I'm working on upping that skillset. Descriptions of aliens/monsters is really important for my style of writing. Sometimes I nail it (the Hatchlings from INFECTED) and sometimes people email me to say "I'm not really sure what X looked like."Oh man!!!

Zuffa trademark of Octagon term
Great stuff Scott! I've been waiting a while for someone to write a sci-fi mma story--looking forward to the rest of it! Zuffa, who owns the UFC, trademarks the term, "Octagon". So you should replace it with the generic term "cage"--this is what other orgs use. I think they have a few other terms trademarked, view the end of a UFC show to see what other terms they hold.Don't worry about the trademark
It's a non-issue, but thanks for pointing it out. I can write about a character going to Disneyland and riding the rides, I can write a story about a character visiting the Playboy Mansion or driving a Ford, etc.
Besides, this story isn't based on the UFC octagon, it's based on an earlier use of the shape as a fighting arnea -- the original "Octagon" was a 1980 movie starring none other than Mister Awesome himself, Chuck Norris.

CRYPT races
The difference is that THE CRYPT takes place about 300 years before THE ROOKIE. At that point (which is, I think 400-450 years from today), all the races basically slaughter each other. "Peace" only came when the Creterakians conquered most of the known galaxy and established their laws. So you'll see other races in THE CRYPT, or should I say, you'll see their steaming corpses ...What a great day!
