NOCTURNAL series bible completedYou may have heard that some peeps are trying to turn my novel NOCTURNAL into a series. Yesterday I finished the "series bible." From Wikipeida, a series bible is "a reference document used for information on a series' characters, settings, and other elements."

This bible outlines the first season, which is projected at twelve episodes. It contains a one-page write-up on each episode, character write-ups and other information that a showrunner would use to make the series a reality. It also contains the pilot script (which I consulted on but did not write, and is awesome), and hopefully some new art.

This is just the first complete draft of the document. The series writers and the producer are reviewing it now; there will be substantial edits in the future. So, while it's "finished," it will probably never be "done."

In effect, the bible for NOCTURNAL is primarily a sales tool. When the producer pitches networks, he can use the bible to show there is a clear vision for the show: characters, plot arcs, settings, background, etc. And not just for the first season, mind you, as we've mapped out the plots of seasons two through five. The bible is a way of saying to the potential buyers: "You're not just buying a log-line and a partial script, we've done the work to make sure you're going to have a cohesive, consistent product that has a logical and satisfying season finale." Considering how expensive it will be to shoot this series, network execs are going to want to see that there is a clear vision.

In that way, a NOCTURNAL series is much closer to DEXTER than, say, LOST. Meaning, we know exactly how the last episode will tie up all the plot threads before a single frame of the first episode is ever shot. At this point, at least, we know exactly where the story is going and the main points that will be in each episode. There are significant differences from the book; those differences are also mapped out in the bible.

Hoo-boy, this was a lot of work. It's 47 pages long. It happened to hit right when I was writing PANDEMIC, was doing a short story for a Charlaine Harris-edited anthology (she wrote the Sookie Stackhouse novels upon which TRUE BLOOD is based), another short story for an anthology edited by Daniel H. Wilson (author of ROBOPOCALYPSE), audiobook recording for BONES ARE WHITE, moving to a new office, and a bunch of other cats that ARealGirl is trying to keep in a tidy herd.

This is my second series bible. I wrote my first back in 2005 for EARTHCORE. Yes, that's right, I wrote a full single-season bible for a 22-episodes adaptation of my first book. I called it up just now to look at it for the purposes of writing this post. Last modified date: 12-21-05. Holy shit. It's been a decade since I wrote it. Looking at it now, I think it's pretty bad-ass. It's probably a good thing to have in the back pocket on the off chance that NOCTURNAL gets made, and on the off-er chance the series does well.

I gave the EARTHCORE series bible to my last three film agents. They all said they wanted it, I don't think a single one of them read it. That's a good lesson to learn: get your content to the movers and shakers that ask for it, absolutely, but temper your expectations: 99.9% of the time, not a damn thing is going to actually happen. But, you keep firing away for that .1% of the time when something might happen.

Will something happen with NOCTURNAL? There's no way of knowing. The series bible brings us one step closer. We've got a great team, I think we've got a great product, and it seems that we're pitching it at an appropriate time in the entertainment world. There is a lot of scifi and paranormal fantasy out there right now, and a lot of it is doing well. So, that part helps. Only "helps," though, because this all comes down to the basics: will it be a compelling drama on television, and will a network look at it and think "hey, people will love this and we will turn a profit."

It's a business, folks. Let's hope NOCTURNAL makes business sense to the people who can write checks.

Man, this was a great time. ARealGirl and I hit LA to be on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast. They U-Stream live video, then put that on YouTube (which is below), and then release the audio podcast. I'll link to that when it goes up.

What a crazy conversation. We talk police corruption, my fiction process, I get to geek out on MMA, I tell how I came up with the concept for THE ROOKIE, tardigrades, the evolution of sentience, my story of podcasting and getting a print deal, and — finally — I reveal who is behind the NOCTURNAL TV series. Get ready to soil yourself with excitement.

In case you don't get (or read) our bi-weekly newsletter, or you didn't hear THE MVP Episode #16, there is no GFL hardcover pre-order this year. If you want the reasons why (and they are good reasons, trust me), then click on through. Otherwise, enjoy your Super Bowl Sunday!

"Sly" by Luis Salazar

Some fun fan art by Luis Salazar. Luis gave Sly from NOCTURNAL a cool, Roman, gothic treatment. How regal, as if Sly ever had aspirations for leadership ...

Junkie Gmork made a cool video of the unboxing of her ten copies of NOCTURNAL. I love comparisons of size. Using your dog in such scientific exercises is always a good thing. Unfortunately, we did not make the NY Times best-seller list (she gives a rah-rah at the end of the video), but a crapload of Junkies did their damndest to help make that happen. Krakens Boosters, represent!

Yes, I admit, I should have been blogging more during the tour. I am a lazy, lazy author. I should be punished. I should be flogged.

What a goddamn amazing time. The Junkies have been happy, charming, and every one of you that made it out is good looking beyond the ability of science to measure such things.

There have been many beverages consumed, many AWESOME SIGLERISM TATS, and -- oh yea -- many copies of NOCTURNAL sold. Check out Rebecca, getting my signature on her back so she can get it tatted up this very morning. Check out the Marie's Children tat and the Wolfpack tat, and there were more.

The bookstores seemed happy, the Junkies were happy, and I was definitely happier than a pig in the mud. Thanks to everyone in San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix, Dallas and Houston who came out. This is the kind of stuff writers dream about.

It may be the last tour ever (these things are really expensive, y'all), and if so, I am glad it went down in style.

I'm sure you guys have heard me blab before, but I'm a huge fan of the Nerdist podcast (with Chris Hardwick, Jonah Ray and fellow lefty-bassist Matt Mira), and a huge fan of Hardwick's stand-up comedy.

I was sooper lucky enough to go on @Nerdist and pimp Nocturnal. Y'all should listen, as the Director of Døøm herself was also called to a mic to talk publishing, getting books turned into movies, sports and Tom Hanks. Tom Hanks should star in everything, by the way.

That's Chris at right and me being giddy. Most of the time I try to be all Evil & Cool™, but sometimes you gotta let your fanboy flag fly.
Yep, after all our prep work and sweat to give you a kick-ass story, NOCTURNAL's "in-store date" is today, April 3, 2012. Theoretically, it should be in stores, but with the current state of publishing, who knows? Your best bet is to call your local bookstore to make sure they have it before you spend your valuable time going to pick one up.

If you are going to buy in stores, buy it by Thursday, April 5! That helps us with the New York Times best-seller list.

If you want to order online, check out the links at http://www.scottsigler.com/nocturnal

PIMP OUT THOSE PICTURES!

James Woll NOCTURNAL tats
Hooooo momma ... that's some wicked work right there. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the awesome NOCTURNAL tats of James Woll. Yes, that's the protection symbol on the left, and the symbol of a certain family from San Francisco. Nails. Hard to think of a better thing to post the day before NOCTURNAL hits stores. James, you rock the hizzy.
Those of you who listened to the first draft might know the answer to this, so don't chat about it in comments to avoid SPOILERS!, but this is still pretty fun.

Good thing our trisomic little campers in that novel aren't mice. Seems being XXY makes our furry little text subjects rather randy.

This article by Jennifer Welsh from LiveScience.com she covers research on mice genetically engineered so the effects of the X and Y chromosomes were separated from the mouse's sexual development. The experiment found that males with an extra female sex chromosome (XXY) had "insatiable sex drives."

One can only wonder what impact that extra chromosome might have on Sly's dating habits.

Sadly, the article is quite deficient in mouse pick-up line jokes and "bow-chicka-wow-wow" comments, but the photo cutline does refer to "mouse viagra," so at least there's that.

Scott's 2012 tour and appearance schedule has been set! Check out all the fun below as we set up a little West Coast vs. East Coast rivalry! There will be freebies for pre-ordering both NOCTURNAL and THE MVP, freebies for showing up at a tour stop, and even a treat for whichever coast makes the best showing once both tours are done. You're really going to want to listen to all these details Junkie, so I'm not even going to mention the big secret news about Scott maybe buying stock in Hostess to save the chocodile.*

*Disclaimer: Scott did not buy stock. Chocodiles are kind of gross
