Immortality ... for jellyfish! Okay, okay, not what you wanted to hear after seeing my screaming headline. I know, a lot like an incoming president telling you we'll have "bipartisanship and unity between the parties" only to have that same president telling you two years later that if you stay home on election day "that's what they want you to do!" But still, immortality is immortality, right?
The Turritopsis nutricula is a wee little creature that apparently can turn itself from an adult back into a polyp, which is the "baby" stage of a jellyfish. Once it reverts, it starts to age again. Once it gets to a certain age, it reverts again. Repeat as necessary, and you're like the Highlander.
But you know what gets my goat? When Nature goes out and rips off Hollywood. For fuck's sake, those of us who've seen Cocoon have heard this one before. All I know is I wouldn't want the three dudes in the picture below all pissed of at me for copyright infringement.

We can either try to study these creatures to find out what biochemical changes enable them to regenerate so we could use this to extend our own lives or we can hunt them down and kill every one of these jellyfish out of spite.

Forgive me for posting this in an inappropriate blog entry, but... Am reading Ancestor, the first book I've had time to read in weeks, and completely enjoying it. Except WTF is with a 45 year old being an "old woman"? Are you kidding me? And because she's hot in bed, she's an "old nympho"? Dude. Seriously? Wake up and look around you. Women aren't old until they're 70, and that's NOW. And frankly, if you don't want a woman who's had enough experience in the sack that she's insanely amazing, well...bummer for you.
Keep on writing. I'm a writer too and you're really good. But seriously.. Shut the fuck up about the YOUNG "old women"!
