Happy Thanksgiving, Junkies! The FDO™ thinks that Thanksgiving is actually the goriest holiday of them all, so why not bust out some of your Goreline calls? No story in this episode, but some great Junkie feedback and a wee little rant about the Twelve Days of Christmas and that friggin' pear tree ...

Here are my two cents
on tuning the rookie down. I would the be the target market, if you tune it down. I love the rookie. To make it more avialable, you could turn down some if not most of the language. But you could try to leave some "shits" or "son of a bitch", or a couple "f*cks". I'd buy it either way. Then my brother could read it, who is in 4th grade. Just my opinion.

A kid's version of The Rookie?
On the subject on doing a 'safe for kids' edition of The Rookie - you list 3 alternatives.
Well - one of'em just doesn't work: you can't seriously consider making just one version of The Rookie, which is also safe for kids to read?
You have a particular, very special style which I have'nt heard anyone get nowhere close to in the podcasting world (it's gooooood s...). It would be a betrayal to that style to redo some of your work to make it politically correct and safe for kids.
But I can't see the problem in doing an extra version, a kids version of The Rookie - not only would you extend your following of loyal jonesing junkies, it sounds like you even could do some serious good in the process.
(And when the kids get older, they'll want to listen to, buy and read all the rest of the fantastic gore-ridden, foulmouthed, ingenious, completely captivating product you spew out into an innocent and non-suspecting world soon to fall to your world reign).
No, seriously - I would not consider it selling out to do a kids version of The Rookie. The story is forbidden land for kids in its present adult version; but it could have a fantastic and positive impact for a lot of kids who otherwise have nothing but sissy-wizards and elves to read about.
Have a happy Thanksgiving - I'm out.

Definitely do a Kids version
Definitely do a Kids version in addition to the original. Then Junkies like treed and G-man can take it to the masses of young malleable minded school kids and get them hooked early!

Hi Kids! It's me, Mr. Sigler! On last weeks episode, Perry politely convinced the triangle to leave his private area with the help of mister chicken scissors!
Awesome
its kinda weird hearing your own voice being projected over a phone on the internet. Its also really awesome to hear a figure such as the FDO respond to it. Im bummed to not be able to actually meet him on the stank tour II.
Im just trying to do my part in promoting your books ^_^

Fuck them. The language
Fuck them. The language makes the novel. Its your unique signiture, your fingerprint upon the literary world.

Hey! How 'bout those
Hey! How 'bout those Lions! . . . Um, sorry, hommes, I heard on WWJ they lost . . . again.
Re: The Rookie
You should definitely make a YA edition of The Rookie. I think kids would love it and toning down the language will help turn teachers into Pushers for the FDO. The Rookie can be our entry drug! Imagine a legion of glassy-eyed teens and pre-teens lining up for their next fix! Yessss!
Plus, reading is cool, yo!
As much as I don't want to agree
I have to degree to a point. THe language does make the novel, to some degree.

PG-13 version of Rookie
Does the publishing industry make alternate versions (R versus PG13) of books? If an alternate version (or re-write) helps to rack up more dominance in the bookstores and brings in more cash to buy more tanks/ammunition/robot drones for the coming Sigler army, then you have to say it would be worth some tweaks to the original story. The language doesn't make that story as much as the character development and awesome story universe.FDO Stank vs. Wild Hockey
Dearest FDO:I am a loyal junkie bitch and will throw my last ounce of tasty blood on the pyre but you gots to lay off the folks digging the Wild Hockey.
I have Wild season tickets. I live a mile from 'The X' and walk to games even when it's -30 out. I LOVE HOCKEY.
However... I'll be at the Stank and not at The X. For me, the hard part is going to be getting into my car and heading to Mpls for a night. My heart belongs on the East side of the River.
We're a literate bunch and I cannot wait to meet you. Gots to bring a friend eh?

Loved the Goreline!!!
Definately YES to doing an alternate version of The Rookie with toned down language, ( actually I bet the kids use those words more than their parents and teachers do but hey, let's keep the idealism along with Siglerism) 2 versions, one for the kids and the original in print, but when the movie comes, it HAS to be the R rated , unless it's animated, then who cares!!! We will love it no matter what!*I am the Rear Admiral but Sigler gives the Orders*
Rookie for kids
What about writing a different story altogether set in the rookie universe? That way you can make it kid safe and not change the original. (Like you don't have enough writing projects going on!!)The Rookie
Yeah, I think that if you're going to do it at all, make two versions. It would suck for the original version to be toned down.about Thanksgiving
This will probably piss you off, but I'm going to quote some BtVS at you:

ADDICTIVE COMICS - MUR LAFERTY

Sorry for shouting. Please, please, please convince Mur to have her Playing For Keeps world done up in proper graphic novel / comic book form. Please. If she has contractual obligations with the Playing For Keeps book, then she can at least do other stories from that world.
I want to make absolutely sure that I'm being totally clear here: Playing. For. Keeps. NEEDS to be a graphic novel. Really.

The Rookie
Hehe. When I first heard about the graphic novel version of The Rookie, I thought that would be excellent for the kids who like to read about sports, and I was reminded about the various book series about hockey and soccer I saw at the library when I worked there. I never read those books myself, even when I was at that age, but it sure seems as if The Rookie would fit right in.And while I don't mind harsh language, it's not something that I really care about, so if the launguage is all that'd change, I say go all in on the education-friendly version. I don't remember if there were a lot of politcally incorrect stuff in The Rookie though, but as far as I recall, Quentin Barnes goes from being a politically incorrect talent to a role model for young athletes. Well, assuming you ignore any of his illegal activities. Sure, they were for good causes, but perhaps schools don't want to teach kids that the ends justify the means? If so, parts of the story might have to be changed, and that's where I draw the line.
Not that you'd have to draw the line there, because you'd still have plenty of other opportunities to be as politically incorrect as you want to. So I won't blame you if you decide to go George Lucas on The Rookie. I'll blame society instead.
As for having two different versions of the same book, that seems strange. Wouldn't the kids just want to read the original? And assuming that the content of The Rookie is what's going to lure kids into reading a book instead of watching TV, wouldn't they just end up downloading the uncensored podcast instead? Oh well, I'll let the teachers figure that out. :-)
Kindlier Gentler Sigler?
As a parent of four, I can't imagine a kid friendly version of Scott Sigler. I feel his current works would lose something if toned down. Part of the style and energy within the story is the reality that there is lots and LOTS of violence.
That said, Mark Yoshimoto Nemcoff did (is doing) an all ages story Transister Rodeo which differs from his normal works such as Number One with a Bullet. Not saying the FDO has the time but... to me that would be the way to expand his influence to the youths of the world.
Youth version of Rookie
I was torn when I listened to you even thinking about toning down your content. But I began thinking about the many times I have been taking about the Rookie to friends (and enemies), I then I remember that this person's parents would not like them listening to the language. Of course, sometimes the kid will let me hear them say something as bad as our FDO and I continue pushing them their first fix!
If there was a youth version, there would be no conflict and I could push all day and not have to explain to their parents where all this "new" language was coming from.
Imagine reading Rookie in 9th grade English class!

I would highly suggest, for all the reasons you gave, making a YA version, but keep the original available as well.
And GO LIONS!!!!
Well, after listening to Nocturnal 38 and reading this
I seem to agree with the majority sentiment. Go ahead an do a second version, but do NOT attempt to consolidate it all into some hybrid bastardization. However, if you go ahead with this, I do think it's imperative that you make an obvious distinction on the cover somehow. Something like "Rookie Jr. for the YA one of maybe have one of those red censored blocks over it.
As far as the message you send to the world's spawn, you generally do a damn good job. I'm in the midst of the tree ware version of Infected and had to stop and admire the subtlety with which you demonstrated the value of freedom in Chapter 29 while Dew is talking to his daughter. Most people only think freedom is important for themselves, not other folks and you used that situation to realistically illustrate how that's a load of crap.
