The final draft of my next novel, FLIER, is 51% complete. Keep in mind this “final” is the version my agent takes to publishers, so if we’re lucky enough to make a deal we’re right back to first-draft status, but this is still a good thing. I’m definitely in the home stretch.
It’s an interesting process. The agent was very hands-on with INFECTED, the book he used to get my my publishing deal with Crown, but largely hasn’t been that involved in the drafts of my last three novels (CONTAGIOUS, ANCESTOR, NOCTURNAL). Since we already had a deal in place for those books, and since we had an editor at Crown working very hard on those titles (“Tha Shiv” is his name, red ink is his game), the agent focused his time on other projects. With FLIER, the agent is very hands-on once again because he’ll be taking it out to the market — if it doesn’t sell, I don’t get paid, and if I don’t get paid, he doesn’t get paid. My agent likes to get paid.
The process is frustrating to say the least. I’ve become accustomed to Tha Shiv’s editing style. We’ve made a great team. Now I’m working through the agent’s changes, and trying to balance between what he thinks needs to be done and what I, as the creator, know what needs to be done. It’s a process. I want him to have the right tool for the job and I want him to be confident he has a hit novel on his hands, because how he does with this book could impact my income for the next three to five years. Hence, this isn’t the time to draw a line in the sand and scream “my way is right, ya sonofabitch!”
So we have about three more weeks of work, then FLIER will be polished up and ready to be hurled at the faces of editors everywhere. I could wind up with Crown again, could land with a new publisher, or could pass on Big Publishing altogether and just put it out as an Empty Set Entertainment book (the lil’ company I run with @ARealGirl).
We shall see, Xur, we shall see!
PS: No, I can’t tell you what FLIER is about. Because I am a dick like that. It probably won’t even be named FLIER when it’s finally available.
PPS: No, this book has nothing to do with THE CRYPT, EARTHCORE, MT. FITZROY, HUNTER HUNTERSON & SONS or KISSYMAN.
